The Certified Medical Assistant performs a comprehensive range of clinical, billing, and clerical services in an outpatient behavioral health setting, under the supervision of a registered nurse and/or physician.
Major Duties and Essential Functions:
Cross-trained throughout the clinic to support various departments.
Greet, receive, and prepare patients for their appointments.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of examination areas.
Screen and direct telephone calls appropriately.
Schedule appointments and coordinate patient flow efficiently.
Provide information according to department/hospital policy and route calls to the appropriate personnel.
Take and relay messages as needed.
Obtain relevant diagnostic test results prior to patient appointments.
Assist patients, visitors, and staff by determining their needs and providing assistance or directions.
Register patients in the registration system and any applicable departmental systems, verifying insurance information and collecting necessary documentation. Accept payments as applicable.
Prepare patients for physician examinations, escort them to examination rooms, and record vital signs in the patient chart.
Assist physicians during examinations and procedures. Clean and prepare exam/procedure rooms between patients.
Follow up with patients and communicate relevant information to physicians.
Maintain patient charts, departmental files, records, logs, including billing and appointment records. Pre-register outpatients for the next day’s appointments.
Inventory and order office and clinical supplies and equipment. Ensure equipment is functioning properly and arrange for maintenance or repairs.
Review and process all incoming mail for the department, distributing as appropriate.
Enter data into databases and logs for statistical purposes. Maintain and adapt spreadsheets and electronic files as needed. Prepare routine correspondence and transcribe physician notes if required.
Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
At least 2 years of experience in a clinical or ambulatory setting.
Experience working with patients with psychiatric or behavioral health disorders is preferred.
Flexibility to adapt to a fast-paced environment, with effective problem-solving skills and excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
High school diploma or GED required.
Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is required.
Compensation Information:
Salary range for PRN:
$28.50 per hour, fixed rate, depending on experience.
