Pay Range: In accordance with the City of East Chicago’s Salary Ordinance, passed by the Common Council

Responsibilities

Process Operation, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting: Operate wastewater treatment plant equipment (pumps, engines, generators, clarifiers, conveyors, bar screens, meters, valves, UV disinfection equipment, sludge dewatering presses, and gates) to control flow and process wastewater, sludge, and effluent.

Monitor plant gauges, meters, SCADA, automated composite samplers, and equipment control panels to ensure proper processing of wastewater.

Observe and interpret operational variations/problems and make appropriate corrective adjustments as needed.

Report significant problems requiring additional assistance to the plant operator and operations manager, and call out appropriate maintenance personnel.

Sampling: Operate and maintain plant-refrigerated automated composite samplers; collect WWTP samples by NPDES requirements and refrigerate them until pick-up by lab personnel; collect seasonal bacterial samples by the WWTP NPDES permit; maintain chain of custody for all environmental samples.

Sludge Blanket Readings: Use a core sampler to periodically assess depth in each of the five tanks; record measurements on the process control sheet.

Lab Testing: Conduct physical settling tests of mixed liquor and return sludge; complete pH and dissolved oxygen testing and record results; enter daily data and import analytical data from the contract laboratory into the HACH software as directed.

Preventive Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance or complete a repair order for additional assistance; monitor operation of plant treatment equipment and perform weekly sand filter maintenance.

Record Keeping: Maintain daily shift log; record meter and gauge readings; provide copies of records to the Chief Plant Operator or Operations Manager; enter and import data as directed.

Public Service and Communications: Respond to emergency calls from residents; interact politely with the public; provide answers or direct inquiries appropriately; coordinate response with wastewater division personnel.

Housekeeping: Maintain clean, organized plant conditions; coordinate large-scale cleaning tasks; inform the vactor truck crew when hoppers are filled; assist with winter snow removal and ice melt as needed.

Teamwork: Work effectively with the plant operations team and other city departments; participate in team meetings and problem-solving; support team decisions and collaborate with colleagues.

Safety: Perform tasks safely; comply with safety policies; identify and report hazards.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Basic Chemistry, Physics, Math, Quality Assurance fundamentals, Chemical properties of wastewater, Standard operating procedures in wastewater treatment, Safety policies and regulations.

Wastewater Division Operations and Processes.

Required Skills: Operation of plant equipment, basic computer skills, use of process control software and lab equipment, instrument calibration, and data entry.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively; work in a team; multitask and perform tasks safely; English language proficiency; background and drug checks as required; schedule adaptability.

Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent.

Certification / License

Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

Possess Wastewater Operator Certifications from IDEM or the Wastewater Treatment Plant Certification from the State of Indiana (Preference for Class I-IV-III and IV).

Physical demands include lifting up to 25 lbs, climbing, standing, crawling, and operating equipment; vision and hearing requirements; and other related activities as described.
