To support its expanding portfolio, Jupiter Power is seeking a

Director of Energy Management

who will be responsible for managing a Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) desk along with associated processes and systems to support the daily trading and dispatching operations of Jupiter’s battery energy storage systems (BESS) portfolio, with an initial concentration in ERCOT. This individual will have the opportunity to make a quantifiable impact on the company’s P&L by working in Jupiter’s front office alongside traders, real-time operators, analysts, regulatory staff, and the data science team. This position will be part of a growing trading desk managing operating assets in ERCOT with expansion into CAISO, PJM, MISO, NYISO, and NEPOOL.

Regular duties include:

Managing desk activities related to Level 4 QSE participation in ERCOT, including timely management of all market submissions and ISO-required communication.

Implementing and developing internal processes for actions and procedures to comply with QSE market participation requirements.

Supporting the Trading/Dispatching team to understand and implement new market rules and regulations that impact portfolio operations.

Training junior real-time traders on market operations and energy management.

Managing relationships with the MMS vendor to support the trading and dispatch of BESS assets in the Day-Ahead Energy, Real-Time Energy, and Ancillary Service Markets.

Supporting initiatives to advance internal proprietary tools for scheduling and dispatch decision-making in the Real-Time market.

Key Responsibilities

QSE Management

Apply in-depth ISO/ERCOT market operations knowledge to manage QSE activities related to market submissions, ISO communications, and real-time responses.

Lead the development of procedures and guidelines for the QSE desk and wider trading team to fulfill Level-4 QSE requirements in ERCOT, in accordance with Jupiter Power's risk policies and third-party agreements.

Coordinate with Jupiter’s SCADA team to identify and troubleshoot communication issues between site equipment, internal data systems, and third-party partners such as the TO or ISO.

Ensure compliance with ISO protocols and internal procedures, including working with internal compliance groups to adhere to PUC & NERC rules.

Lead the implementation of ERCOT RTC+B market design changes in Jupiter’s systems and procedures.

Manage the relationship with Jupiter’s MMS vendor to ensure QSE system functionality and troubleshoot issues.

Maintain relationships with ISO representatives to support asset onboarding and ongoing operations and reporting.

Portfolio Management

Collaborate with trading colleagues to devise asset-optimization strategies to maximize revenue and support real-time BESS trading and bidding strategies within risk policy guidelines.

Coordinate with internal teams (Regulatory, Trading/Dispatching, Settlements) and external entities (System Operators) to understand BES participation and adapt to market changes.

Manage daily real-time operations to ensure trading and scheduling decisions meet energy and ancillary service obligations while maximizing revenue and maintaining capacity (state of charge) compliance.

Implement real-time communication processes with Field Operations and Remote Operations regarding asset status and outages.

Assist in commissioning new sites and ensure proper setup for market participation.

Support the data science team in developing tools for portfolio management and real-time operations.

Requirements

Five or more years in ERCOT power market operations such as control room operations, power trading, generation scheduling, energy management, or asset management.

Experience managing a team of traders or operators in the energy sector.

Working knowledge of one or more ISOs (ERCOT, CAISO, WECC, SPP, MISO, PJM, IESO, NYISO, ISONE).

Degrees in finance, economics, math, electrical theory, or relevant fields.

Ability to work effectively under high stress and rapidly changing situations.

High standards in risk management, performance, relationships, communication, analysis, decision-making, and compliance.

Self-starter with enthusiasm for innovation and teamwork.
