Overview The Role:

The

Staff Deploy Software Engineer

is responsible for driving the strategic vision, deployment, automation, and cross-functional integration of software applications used globally in GM’s manufacturing and Customer Care and Aftersales (CCA) plants that build the next generation of transportation. The successful candidate will architect robust solutions for software test automation which includes multiple software applications, programmable logic controllers and hardware, while fostering adoption and alignment with global tools, engineering processes, and organizational objectives.

This role champions the evolution and implementation of software applications — guiding its vision, advancing technological integrations, and embedding it across all plants. The position demands both strategic foresight and hands-on execution, with a cross-functional influence spanning development, testing automation, manufacturing optimization, controls, and Program/ Product and Engineering management.

The ideal candidate leads with innovation, technical agility, and systems thinking, driving adoption of software applications across engineering disciplines while connecting the dots between tools, platforms, and product architectures.

The Staff Deploy Software Engineer will work hands-on building out full-stack application environments based on detailed requirements and system specifications. Deployment activities will include gathering high-level requirements from manufacturing and CCA plant(s), updating existing software installations and/or configuring applications to the specific needs for the plant, testing and troubleshooting issues that may arise relating to either the new code or plant configuration. This role will need to have strong development background to help with process and test automation. This role will also need to identify AI opportunities and implement AI solutions. This role will contribute to security lifecycle maintenance by ensuring that all third-party applications and operating systems are compliant with the GM IT statement of technical direction. This role will also work closely with the development teams and support teams to ensure 100% uptime, reliability, and security.

Responsibilities

Manage and maintain technical vision and direction for software applications.

Deliver dashboards to show project details relevant to senior managers.

Define, manage and implement processes to enhance deployment and testing.

Manage day to day tasks for a team of deployment resources in order to meet project timeline.

Work closely with IT infrastructure delivery teams to install and configure virtual servers in plant data centers with minimum supervision.

Work closely with IT Project Management to ensure launch and deployment activities are tracking for on-time delivery and, escalating any risks as necessary with minimum supervision.

Implement repeatable deployment actions for automation via scripting or CI/CD pipelines.

Work closely with in-plant resources to validate application functionality with physical systems.

Provide analysis and site-specific business configuration required to meet launch and deployment initiatives.

Coordinate testing with upstream and downstream plant software applications to validate data continuity.

Investigate IT system integration problems and provide technical input in problem resolution.

Have knowledge of software monitoring tools for uptime and performance.

Have knowledge or experience in software development.

Maintain technical documentation to reflect accurate and current production installations.

Learn new technical concepts and practices quickly and apply them across multiple types of applications and software.

Must possess a high degree of business insight, creativity, decision making skills, a drive for results, the ability to negotiate, the ability to develop strong peer relationships, and a strong technical learning capability and focus.

You should be somebody who enjoys working on complex system software, is very customer-centric, understands the big picture and feels strongly not only about building good software but about making that software achieve its goals.

You will be required to be available after work hours and weekends to support any critical issues and support application rollouts.

Review pull requests, cross-collaborate with the developers for user stories and test cases.

Actively engage in development team activities associated with brainstorming new solutions and refining current solutions. Drive technical efforts that lead to success in software project delivery.

Possess technical depth and applied experience in multi-layer solutioning, performance tuning, solution debug, incident triage/remediation, and usability improvement.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience

Experience in leading technology teams with strategic and tactical responsibilities

Experience with Agile teams that have regularly delivered software while practicing code review

Knowledge in end-to-end applications hosted on Kubernetes with a focus on scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance

Proven experience diagnosing issues from browser to infrastructure to network to database and all the way back

This role will require you to travel to physical plant locations for workshop or deployment activities

This role may require you to work during manufacturing plant downtime (weekends, second shift, third shift, holidays).

Databases: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, or other databases

Web Application Servers: WebSphere, WebLogic, TomCat, IIS

Infrastructure: Server Provisioning, Virtual Machines, Networking, Cluster servers

OS: Linux, UNIX, Windows Server, Cloud technology

Tools: Team Foundation Server (Azure Dev Ops), IT Service Manager, PowerBI, Jenkins, Chef, GitHub, Fortify, SonarLint/SonarQube, Artifactory, Jira

Strong .NET/C#

Strong Python or PowerShell Scripting

Experience in IT Enterprise Security concepts and implementation

Kepware: configuring IoT Gateway to allow a PLC to talk to an upper level application through Kepware, importing tags, automatic tag generation

10+ years’ experience integrating applications with industrial PLC or robot (or other automation equipment) in a manufacturing and warehousing environments

10+ years’ performing test automation

Manufacturing experience
