Linguistics, tenure-track open rank, artificial intelligence and language, open subfield, University The Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for a new full-time, tenure-track position, beginning in August 25, 2026. This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of assistant professor or tenured associate or full professor. Artificial intelligence developments are upending the scientific landscape and creating unprecedented research opportunities in linguistics. This is a fast growing research area that is leveraging powerful generative AI models to serve as robust artificial model systems for human language and cognition. The University of Michigan will recruit four researchers in artificial intelligence-related research, as part of a cluster of new AI-related positions in the Departments of Linguistics, Psychology, Philosophy, and Psychiatry. All four faculty will also have the opportunity to affiliate with the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science. United States Posting Start Date: 7/24/2025 Date Posted: 7/24/2025 Requirements: We seek outstanding applicants with a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field whose research engages with artificial intelligence in linguistics and language cognition research. We encourage candidates who apply computational methods to linguistic research and engage with different perspectives on the contributions and implications of artificial intelligence, including generative AI, for linguistics. The rank and specific subfield(s) of specialization in Linguistics are open. Successful applicants are expected to hold a Ph.D. degree before the start of the appointment. Applicants should provide evidence of a productive research record and show potential for external funding of their research program. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to curriculum development in their areas of expertise, and teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in Linguistics.
