Overview
General Summary : Reporting to the Associate Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Quality Officer (ACCO, CQO), the Medical Director Infection Prevention and Control is responsible for the oversight and implementation of the Infection Prevention Plan in conjunction with the Administrative Director, Infection Prevention and Control and the hospital Medical Directors, Infection Prevention and Control and hospital Infection Prevention Specialists. The medical director is responsible for overall quality, safety, regulatory activities and performance excellence. Reporting Relationships

Provide subject matter expertise in infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology. Review health-care associated infections with subsequent implementation of infection control and process improvement efforts to reduce HAIs. Develop and implement infection control principles and policies related to reduction of MDROs, outbreak response and special pathogens. Interpret epidemiologic data and improve data infrastructures and data reporting in compliance with NHSN, CMS and other internal metrics. Develop annual goals and plan for implementation of the Infection Control Program; maintain infection-specific rates at or below national best practice. Maintain regulatory requirements, including environment of care standards (disinfection, sterilization and surveillance). Lead system efforts to achieve hand hygiene goals. Lead the development, implementation, and supervision of a systemwide program for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections. Lead system infectious outbreak investigations and ensure emergency preparedness. Design and participate in quality improvement initiatives to reduce harm. Coordinate infection prevention initiatives across the health system, including policy development and facility-wide measures to protect patients, staff and visitors. Monitor patient care for compliance with established standards; investigate sources of infections to determine the source and ensure control. Oversee preparation of Risk Assessment and IC Surveillance data; conduct epidemiologic investigations of findings. Develop and provide education to staff in partnership with operational leaders. Participate in staffing input and annual operating budgets; monitor areas of responsibility for compliance. Supervise infection control staff and participate in their direction and support. Monitor detection and reporting of nosocomial infections using NHSN definitions; review Epidemiological Reports to detect clustering or increases. Monitor isolation practices and Standard Precautions during surveillance; report issues to unit management. Inform hospital leadership, Quality Office and Risk Management of acute issues and assist in management of Infection Control events. Supervise reporting of communicable diseases to local Health Department and other authorities as required. Review Infection Control Guidelines with leaders; submit reports of review or revisions to the Infection Control Committee. Chair, attend and participate in Infection Control Committee meetings and policy/procedure meetings. Participate on the Quality, Safety and Reliability committee to achieve goals. Coordinate epidemiologic activities across the health system, including surveillance and reporting of infections among patients and staff; lead investigations of infection incidents. Participate in product recalls related to healthcare-associated infections. Serve as a liaison to City/County/State Health Departments and CDC as needed for mandatory reporting and outbreak investigations. Ensure hospital infection control program compliance with city, state, federal requirements and accreditation/payor standards. Education/Experience Required
MD or equivalent from an approved LCME medical school; Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship from an ACGME accredited program. Minimum of 10 years in direct patient care and 5 years in healthcare quality and/or performance improvement. Minimum of 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience in a healthcare setting. Two plus (2+) years of experience in Infection Control with strong knowledge of infectious diseases, data collection, and statistics. Strong leadership skills to advance and develop a superior infection prevention program. Ability to manage projects in a highly matrixed organization; excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. Expertise in physician relationships and interdisciplinary team management. Effective supervisory skills including clinical mentoring and coaching. Certifications/Licensures Required
Eligible for Michigan medical licensure and board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. MPH or MHA preferred. Additional Responsibilities
