Overview
TITLE: COLLEGE COUNSELOR REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL Primary Purpose: The High School College Counselors provide students with guidance and support in dealing with an array of issues including academics, college applications and guidance, scheduling, and career planning. Responsibilities
Advises and counsels students regarding academic, scheduling, career and college planning. Remains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible. Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic matters. Teaches college preparatory classes and provides college and career counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents. Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters including academic modifications and/or accommodations. Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities. Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures, and advises on suitable academic tracks. Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events. Evaluates students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning. Identifies issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance rates. Works with students to develop skills, such as organizational and time management abilities and effective study habits. Helps students create a plan to achieve academic, career and collegiate goals. Assists HS administration in scheduling and roster compilation. Adjusts student schedules according to needs and directives. Assists HS administration in advanced program organization and planning. Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed. Teaches students and school staff about topics such as bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation. Maintains records as required. Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work if available Minimum of 2 years of school or collegiate counseling or teaching experience Knowledge of multiple counseling approaches Familiarity with online learning platforms Excellent verbal and written communication skills Empathy and sensitivity to others' needs Strong interpersonal skills About American Baccalaureate School
