Work Arrangement
Onsite - This position requires the employee to be onsite five days a week. Primary work location will be the General Motors Global Technical Center in Warren, MI or potential travel to suppliers or assembly plants as needed (up to 50%).
The Role As a General Assembly Automation Application Specialist (Flawless Launch), you’ll lead the development and deployment of cutting-edge automation strategies that transform how we build vehicles. This role is ideal for a highly technical, hands-on innovator who thrives in ambiguity and is passionate about solving complex manufacturing challenges at scale.
What You’ll Do (Job Responsibilities)
Lead Automation Strategy:
Design and implement advanced automation solutions using robotics, vision systems, and custom tooling to solve non-standard, high-variability assembly challenges.
Develop End-to-End Processes:
Engineer robust, repeatable processes for tasks such as robotic part picking, vehicle inspection, and precision part installation (e.g., doors off/on, IP load, seat load, fluid fill, body chassis marriage).
Drive Technical Execution:
Own the full lifecycle of automation projects—from concept through deployment to installation and in-plant validation —ensuring high success rates and system reliability.
Collaborate Cross-Functionally:
Partner with internal teams and external vendors to align on technical requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
Mentor & Influence:
Guide junior engineers and influence broader functional areas through technical leadership.
Ensure Compliance:
Uphold safety standards, engineering best practices, and regulatory requirements throughout all automation initiatives.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering with a focus on automation systems, project execution, and manufacturing launch experience.
Proficient in robotics, robot guidance, vision systems, robot and PLC programming, equipment and tooling design, and/or automation processing.
Deep understanding of general assembly processes and automation integration.
Skilled in throughput optimization, equipment processing, manufacturing specifications, and knowledge of various math modeling software.
Strong knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement.
Demonstrated commitment to safety and compliance in automation environments.
Proven ability to independently manage complex automation projects.
Experience in equipment installation and construction oversight.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to define and document manufacturing requirements, processes, automation specifications, and hardware requirements.
Experience working with global teams.

Experience in fast-paced, high-throughput environments with a focus on system reliability and maintainability.
Proficient in data analysis and SPC (statistical process control) to drive continuous improvement.
3+ years in a supervisory or technical leadership role.

Background in project and/or construction management.
Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
