Postdoctoral Scholar – University of Colorado Professors I Grooms and W Kleiber in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, are seeking a postdoctoral scholar to collaborate in the design, implementation, and testing of a stochastic parameterization for global ocean models. The position is available as early as January 2018. The research will use prior dynamical considerations and data to develop a multiscale, inhomogeneous random-field model for ocean eddies at scales not resolved by global ocean models. This model will form the basis of a stochastic parameterization to be implemented in a global ocean model. The post-doc will work closely with domain scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO.

Qualifications

PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, or other quantitative field.

Backgrounds in geophysical fluid dynamics and simulation, spatial statistics, and/or stochastic dynamics.

Good communication skills and strong programming skills.

Department context The Department of Applied Mathematics is home to 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty members whose research spans computational mathematics, nonlinear mathematics including nonlinear dynamics and waves, mathematical biology, physical applied mathematics, probability, and statistics. Our faculty have won numerous awards including: four fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two Guggenheim Fellows, an American Statistical Association Fellow, and a Sloan Fellow. Boulder has highly active communities of researchers working on stochastic models for atmospheric and oceanic dynamics at the University, NCAR, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
