Overview Manager, Custodial Services (4am till 1pm Monday through Friday) at Northern Arizona University. This on-site role oversees the daily activities of custodial services within the Facility Services Custodial Department, including leadership, personnel management (hiring and work assignments), training, quality assurance, implementing procedures and policies, monitoring production, tracking work orders and labor hours, coordinating with the campus community and outside contractors, maintaining records and inventory control to ensure the unit’s effectiveness and efficiency. The successful candidate will work 4am to 1pm, Monday through Friday. Opportunities for remote work are rare. Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and may be required to report to work during university closures for emergencies.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership to the custodial department and supervises staff, including hiring, training, and work assignments.

Monitors performance and ensures staff are trained to be effective and compliant.

Identifies performance and employee relations issues; applies HR policies and practices; implements management procedures and strategies.

Establishes work schedules, assigns projects, and tracks labor hours and payroll.

Maintains a productive work environment; assists subordinates with personnel problems involving custodial workers; makes recommendations for hiring, firing, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.

Ensures adherence to established policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.

Manages job- and site-specific safety requirements (hazard assessments, required training, PPE use) and procedures for direct reports; coordinates with EHS for consultation; participates in accident prevention and responds to injuries promptly to prevent further incidents.

Oversees custodial software usage and maintains records on employees, equipment, and maintenance activities.

Performs on-call, call-back, snow removal duties as required and responds to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes.

Qualifications

Experience in facilities or custodial services with leadership responsibilities.

Strong personnel supervision, training, and performance management skills.

Ability to work on-site, with potential exposure to hazards; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; work in environments with extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and loud noises.

Willingness to participate in on-call, call back, and snow removal duties; may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Familiarity with safety procedures and EH&S consultation; experience with custodial software tools.
