An employee in this class performs semiskilled manual labor by providing safe and efficient collection and disposal of household garbage and emptying city resident's trash container from residential areas. The employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment while picking up cans close to cars, mailboxes and telephone poles. An employee in this class must adhere to all traffic laws, ordinances, and City of Reidsville Rules and Regulations. Work involves checking items for proper disposal, pick up trash, brush, litter, bulky items, and recycling materials. Some judgment is required to as when and how established procedures or guidelines are to be applied, knowing what materials to pick up according to the rules of the city and regulations enforced. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards associated with operation of equipment, vibration, electrical current and exposure to chemicals. Work is performed under the supervision of the Solid Waste Management Superintendent and is checked through daily observation, citizen feedback, weekly department safety meetings and through annual appraisals. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and hearing. An employee must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment. The employee is subjects to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, vibration, noise, oils, exposure to heat and chemicals. The employee is subject to both environmental conditions inside and outside.

Essential Duties and Tasks
- Operates equipment for pick up and trash collection.
- Performs a safe, economical, and efficient operation of the equipment in the collection, transportation, and disposal of refuse and recyclables; maneuvers around different directions to get to cans.
- Reads street maps and route sheets to locate route destinations.
- Understands the collection schedule, accomplishes all assigned tasks at a demonstrated level of proficiency, and adheres to safety guidelines and regulations.
- Load trash into collection vehicles.
- Provides information within the area of assignment; responds to customer complaints and issues, requests for service, and inquiries about solid waste collection service from the general public.
- Empties city resident's trash containers.
- Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment in clean and mechanical working order.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Thorough knowledge in garbage collection and disposal.
- Thorough knowledge of City streets.
- Considerable knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, rules and city procedures.
- General knowledge of the current trends and development related to municipal solid waste management and operations.
- Ability to operate assigned vehicles and equipment; read and understand route maps/tools and street signs.
- Ability to apply applicable laws, codes and regulations.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
