Overview

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral appointee in atomic layer deposition of thin films, in situ metrology, interface science, and autonomous materials discovery. This position, supervised by Ashley Bielinski and Alex Martinson, focuses on the development of semiconductor materials and the repair of electronic defects at surfaces and interfaces. This work includes the development of ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor thin films with in situ metrology and the implementation of autonomous processing for accelerated discovery, and investigations into approaches to harness chemical selectivity at material interfaces to react with and repair electronic defects.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will be highly motivated with a strong record in problem solving and scientific publications. The candidate will conceive, plan, and implement scientific research, and report results in publications and conference presentations while modeling Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork. The selected individual will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and gain knowledge of in situ characterization of thin film deposition, heterogeneous interfaces, and autonomous discovery.

Requirements

A PhD in materials science or related science or engineering field received within the past 0-5 years. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to collaborate with researchers from different technical backgrounds. On-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.

Desired Qualifications

Experience in atomic layer deposition (ALD) and semiconductor materials. Hands-on experience maintaining and modifying vacuum deposition equipment. Experience developing and/or performing in situ characterization. Knowledge and experience with thin film and materials characterization using techniques such as ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electronic characterization.
