Non-exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; full-benefits This technical position involves independent on-site inspection of primarily residential building, plumbing and electrical installations to assure compliance with State and County regulations and requirements. Supervision is received from a Chief Inspector and/or the Manager of Inspection Services. Placement as Inspector, Electrical Inspector or Plumbing Inspector can occur depending on qualifications of selected candidate. Work/Life balance programs include: Employee Assistance Program and Employee Wellness Program Generous Tuition Reimbursement Program Other employee-paid benefits Coming in 2025: Employee Health Center with no or low-cost primary and urgent care Responsibilities: Inspect building, plumbing and electrical installations during construction Maintain records of inspections Check plans and specifications for installations Confer with a Chief Inspector on difficult enforcement problems Respond to electronic, telephone and in-person inquiries Drive a County vehicle to various sites throughout the County Prepare and maintain forms and reports related to inspections performed Access the permits tracking system and other automated data sources Participate in the nonresidential inspection of building, plumbing, electrical and other possible trades, as needed Perform building, plumbing and electrical plan reviews on commercial projects and other structures, as needed Perform other related duties as required Qualifications: High school graduation or the equivalency Minimum 9 years building, plumbing and electrical installation work experience Possession of the following certifications or ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications within six (6) months: ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1 Possession of a valid automobile operator's license Possession of a State of Maryland Master Plumber's or Electrician License (or a comparable license from another jurisdiction with ability to obtain this license by reciprocity within 30 days after hire), will reduce years of plumbing/electrical installation work experience to 7 years. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of building, plumbing and electrical installations Working knowledge of the International Building Code, Plumbing Code and the National Electrical Code Ability to obtain, and maintain, the following certifications: ICC Combination Residential Inspector – B1 within 6 months of hire; P1, E1 and M1 within 18 months of hire Ability to effectively understand and interpret plans and specifications Ability to determine any violations of applicable codes and ordinances; to evaluate corrective actions and to approve work Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems and equipment Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co-workers, and the general public Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills
