Overview Assistant Professor – Physical Oceanography in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University (NC State). The department seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in physical oceanography, in the area of large-scale ocean circulation and global ocean processes. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to: roles of the oceans in climate variability and climate change, boundary current dynamics, geophysical wave dynamics, the global thermohaline circulation, and exchange processes between the oceans and marginal seas. Skills in the application of theory, observations, computer modeling and data assimilation, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning in marine science are preferred, as is a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaborations across and beyond the geosciences. The start date of this position is August 16, 2026.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including general marine physics and/or physical oceanography (e.g., MEA460), and other classes commensurate with the candidate’s interest and expertise. MEAS places a high value on excellent instruction and the use of discipline-based education research proven teaching methods.

Develop and maintain an active research program leading to ongoing external funding, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to the student mentorship and supervision of graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Engage in service activities within the department, college, university, and professional communities, as appropriate for a tenure-track faculty member.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in physical oceanography or a related science.

Strong potential for outstanding accomplishments in research, research supervision, and teaching.

A demonstrated ability or clear potential for interdisciplinary collaborations and the use of theory, observations, modeling, data assimilation, and AI/ML in marine science.

About MEAS and NC State Affiliated with the College of Sciences at NC State, MEAS is one of the largest interdisciplinary geoscience departments in the nation. The department supports study of severe weather and its impacts, coastal processes and ecosystems, land surface evolution, as well as water quality, biogeochemistry, and climate change. The successful candidate will have opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions with more than 40 marine, earth, and atmospheric scientists in the department on problems related to global and regional climate/environmental change, environmental processes and prediction, and the interactions among components of the Earth system.
