Public Defense Attorney - Supervisor (NDD)

This recruitment is for one Special Duty Assignment (SDA) as Public Defense Attorney – Supervisor within the Northwest Defenders Division (NDD). Practice Area placement will be King County District Court and Calendar supervision. The assignment is anticipated to last up to three (3) to six (6) months but may be extended or end early based on business needs. This recruitment is used to create an eligibility pool to fill future SDA vacancies over the next six (6) months. Summary: This recruitment is open internally to current King County Department of Public Defense (DPD) employees who have completed their probationary period. Qualifications and experience: Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school Member of the Washington State Bar Association in good standing and at least three years of legal practice Washington State Driver's License or ability to travel to required destinations Knowledge of court procedures and the law; considerable trial experience; excellent writing, research, and analytic skills; and expertise in case preparation, handling, and disposition Ability to supervise the work of other lawyers and support staff; mentor, develop, evaluate, and support employees in a fast-paced environment; willingness to carry a partial caseload Aptitude for management and leadership; ability to work within a team of managers Responsibilities and duties: Supervise attorneys and unit staff; develop, evaluate, train, mentor, and coach personnel Ensure work conforms with professional standards, statutes, rules, and DPD and county policies Conduct disciplinary investigations in coordination with NDD Managing Attorney, Director’s Office, and HR; impose discipline when appropriate Implement and monitor corrective and career development plans; conduct annual performance evaluations Balance caseloads among attorneys; ensure up-to-date knowledge of DPD policies and relevant legal developments Maintain a computerized case-management system; track caseloads and assignments Identify ethical conflicts of interest; work with Director’s Office to ensure training and resources Support and promote DPD’s mission and policies; collaborate with the Division Management Team Serve on-call at least twice a year and supervise on-call attorneys Collaborate with supervisors to coordinate overlapping work and support division operations Set a positive, supportive tone within the Division Perform other duties as assigned Work location and schedule: Onsite reporting requirements based on operational needs; may travel to various locations in King County If assigned to the civil commitment unit, travel to hospitals and treatment centers; reporting requirements may change to meet priorities Rotation of work location, practice area, and workflow may occur to support operations Possible assignment to any of the Seattle or Kent offices Dexter Horton Building – Seattle; Jefferson Street Building – Seattle; Ninth & Jefferson Building – Seattle; Meeker Street Building – Kent; Kent Professional Center – Kent Employment terms: This position is exempt from overtime under FLSA; hours required as needed to perform the job DPD policies apply, including Ethical Walls and Outside Work policy for attorneys The position is represented by Teamsters Local 117 Why King County?
