Mechanical Engineering Design Manager
- Data Center Colo - Sterling, VA This opportunity is working directly with a leading mission-critical data center developer / wholesaler / colo provider. This company provides turnkey data center solutions custom-fit to the requirements of their client's operational needs, focusing on reliability of mission-critical facilities for hyperscale and enterprise customers. This challenging and unique role involves managing the design of Critical Power Systems with a focus on HVAC / Cooling / Mechanical Equipment for new data centers and expansions to existing data centers. The ideal candidate will have experience designing electrical systems for large data centers, with in-depth knowledge of heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, selecting HVAC equipment, energy modeling, and other engineering calculations, as well as Electrical Power Distribution System design and installation. Experience with electrical equipment design for Generators, UPS systems, and electrical switchgear is required. The candidate will lead and manage the design of critical and high-impact components, collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams, and promote best practices. Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and trends, proposing innovative solutions to enhance applications. Drive continuous improvement initiatives, implementing processes and tools to enhance engineering efficiency. You will lead the design team in working with all trades and stakeholders on projects. Effective communication with internal teams and clients is essential. Candidates should have progressed through consulting engineering roles to be considered. Responsibilities
Manage projects, create designs and plans, provide and gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical and mechanical engineering design role for small to medium sized data center facility design projects. Create conceptual designs gathered from meetings. Manage and work with the engineering team to create RFPs and RFIs. Establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within company policies; translate these into clear work statements for the field. Review drawings and specifications, participate in equipment selection, and provide input to the design team where needed. Provide peer review as needed. Represent the Operations team in startup, testing, factory witness testing, commissioning, and turnover. Support the commissioning manager as needed. Serve as the single point of contact for the Operations Team for building turnover. Ensure that design and construction emphasize operability and maintainability. Develop guidelines and standards for operational processes. Provide input to the development of design standards. Develop and administer an Operations and Maintenance audit program. Lead After-Action Reviews and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into policies. Provide Subject Matter Expertise on critical systems maintenance and operations. Assist with troubleshooting issues as needed. Provide onsite support during major maintenance activities if needed. Ensure proper procedures are written and reviewed before such activities. Qualifications
5-10+ years experience Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or similar engineering degree Licensed PE / EIT a Plus Previous experience at an Engineering Consulting firm a MUST Experience with hyperscale data center design, testing and commissioning Must have experience managing an engineering design team Experience using Revit MEP projects, AutoCAD MEP; BIM is a plus Experience with Electrical Systems such as UPS, Generators, Switchgear, and Batteries Experience on complex data center/mission critical facilities design projects Experience with Mechanical Systems (HVAC, CFD, Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, CRAC/CRAH, Air Handling Units, etc.) Experience in operational handover of mission-critical facilities Experience developing design/commissioning/operational standards and guidelines Experience performing root-cause analysis on complex failure scenarios Experience developing operating procedures and emergency procedures Experience performing field observations during construction Self-starter, self-motivated, able to prioritize and work independently Military/Military Veterans experience is a plus, especially those with electrical or mechanical backgrounds (e.g., Navy nukes, Army power, Air Force power production, etc.) Submittal Instructions
