Commercial HVAC Building Engineer - 2 Positions Available

Overview Beach Building Services (BBS) at California State University Long Beach is dedicated to supporting the university by ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and development of the campus. BBS provides facilities-based comprehensive support to the campus in the areas of academics, activities and event services. These facilities contribute to a well-rounded and enriching campus experience for students, faculty and staff. Key Responsibilities Operate, maintain, repair and inspect heating, air conditioning, water treatment and ventilating equipment (e.g., boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, circulating water pumps, blower vans, valves, ducting, gauges). Test and adjust, as required, chemically treat boiler hot water, chilled water, condenser and cooling tower water and other systems as needed. Maintain, inspect, diagnose and make emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, air and oil distribution systems. Periodically adjust air handling equipment to achieve air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building areas or buildings. Repair and replace bearing, shafts, seals, rings, and electrical wiring and install mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes requiring journey-level skills in one or more basic trades. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems for central and decentralized building plants, and expertise in building temperature control systems including electric, electronic, and pneumatic controls. Experience with facilities maintenance procedures, plumbing systems, electric motor control operations, and water treatment systems. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; ability to interact professionally with the university community, co-workers, and supervisors; maintain a safe and respectful environment. Professional image and demeanor; university or institutional experience is highly valued. Trade-related higher education and CFC certification are desirable qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey-level experience in operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems required. Four years of experience is preferred. Physical Summary Heavy work - lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing. Licenses / Certificates BOC Level I & II Certification is preferred. A valid California driver’s license is required. Employees who operate motorized vehicles or use a personal vehicle on university business more than once a month are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program. Department FM Engineering Services Classification Building Service Engineer Compensation Salary placement is determined by education, experience, and qualifications, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,998 - $8,737 per month. Benefits Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year. Time Base 1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week. Duration of Appointment This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
