University of Maryland Medical System . Under limited supervision, performs as lead worker of Staff Dosimetrists in providing comprehensive treatment plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Responsibilities

Computes dose distributions and generates isodose curves for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy in accordance with departmental procedures and generally accepted dosimetry practices. Participates in complex situations, localization and immobilization procedures and fabrication of custom treatment devices. Designs and implements quality assurance procedures in accordance with departmental procedures. Evaluates patient charts to ensure that the treatment plan reflects the prescriptions, the documentation is complete and the dose calculations are accurate. Reports to the physicist and physician on dose errors and changes in treatment parameters. Performs verification checks to ensure accuracy of dose calculations. Calibrates equipment, collects and analyzes data to verify equipment parameters. Provides support to physicists in dosimetry calibration, QA and new procedures. Assists in dosimetry calibration, QA, in-vivo patient dosimetry and QA checks of therapy equipment such as output checks, energy checks, flatness and symmetry. Actively participates in clinical projects and Quality Improvement initiatives. Coordinates/participates in brachytherapy procedures, including ordering radioactive sources, scheduling events, maintaining inventory and records; assists in QA checks of brachytherapy devices and generates treatment plans under supervision. Provides leadership and guidance to the dosimetry staff in accordance with departmental standards and procedures. Assists in administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Dosimetrist, ensures proper staffing, and conducts new employee orientation and training. Serves on assigned clinical committees. Education and Training

Attends and participates in in-service and other relevant training courses for professional development. Participates in dosimetry treatment planning conferences and patient review conferences. Takes leadership role in educational programs for technologists, dosimetrists, residents and medical students; assumes instructional responsibilities for dosimetry trainees under the direction of the Chief Dosimetrist. Responsible for indirect supervision and mentoring of medical dosimetry trainees. Qualifications

Education and Experience

A BS degree in physics or related field; or graduation from an approved Medical Dosimetry Program through AAMD; and five years of experience as a dosimetrist is required. Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) is required. 3 years’ experience as a Dosimetrist in a Clinical Radiation Therapy department, or equivalent, is required. CPR Certification for Health Care Professionals. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Understanding of physics and dosimetry principles of external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Knowledge of radiation therapy equipment and dose measurement instruments and detectors such as diodes, ionization chambers, TLDs and film dosimetry. Effective verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated leadership abilities to oversee dosimetry workflow and train staff. Ability to work with ionizing radiation and to provide care appropriate to the patient populations served. Maintains competent rating in clinical treatment planning. Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and participates in safety initiatives. Takes action to correct risks, reports adverse events and near misses, and communicates risks to appropriate personnel. What You Will Do – Additional Information
