About the role We’re seeking a
Director of Engineering
to lead our Infrastructure and Backend Engineering teams. This role is pivotal in shaping our technical roadmap, hiring and mentoring engineering talent, and ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performing systems.
The ideal candidate combines technical depth with leadership experience—hands-on in designing backend systems and data models at scale, preferably in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred). You will help scale our engineering practices and product infrastructure as we grow in healthcare.
What you’ll do Leadership & People Management:
Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team across infrastructure and backend disciplines.
Set clear technical direction, facilitate architectural alignment, and foster a culture of accountability, learning, and impact.
Collaborate with Product, Data, and Go-to-Market leaders to align engineering efforts with company goals.
Technical Strategy & Architecture
Design and implement robust, secure, and extensible backend services and APIs.
Architect scalable data models and infrastructure to support healthcare workflows and automation.
Provide technical guidance on backend and data system design to elevate team capabilities.
Own our AWS infrastructure strategy, including deployment pipelines, observability, and incident response.
Promote automation, reliability engineering, and cost-effective infrastructure design.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, SOC 2, and other healthcare security standards.
Execution & Delivery
Prioritize engineering initiatives for delivery, iteration, and impact.
Establish best practices for quality, performance, testing, and documentation.
What we’re looking for
10+ years of engineering experience, with 3+ years in leadership managing 8-10 people.
Strong backend engineering or architecture background, with fluency in system design, data modeling, and distributed systems.
Expertise in AWS and modern DevOps tools.
Experience leading cross-functional teams in fast-paced, product-driven environments.
Proven success scaling engineering teams and systems from early stages to maturity.
Bonus Points If:
Experience with FHIR, HL7, EHRs, claims data, or healthcare standards.
Experience in HIPAA-regulated or SOC 2-compliant environments.
Experience deploying ML models or collaborating with ML teams.
Located in or willing to work from San Francisco HQ.
