Job Description Position serves as operator of heavy construction equipment and the maintenance, repair and construction of public thoroughfares and related improvements. Serves as crew chief or supervisor of crews in the maintenance of drainage systems, street repairs and emergency responses. Will be required to with infrequent overtime during evening hours, weekends, holidays plus stand-by on a rotation basis.
**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**
Typical Duties
Operates all heavy equipment such as graders, dozers, scrapers, compactors, grade-alls, tractor/trailer rigs, chip spreaders, asphalt lay down machine and oil truck (front and rear). Cleans services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment according to manufacturer's specifications and established procedures. Maintains records of preventive maintenance service performed and daily operation. Makes on-site decisions concerning the grades and location of excavation of all heavy equipment. Directs the subordinate operators in specific tasks required by job assignment to ensure job progresses safely and efficiently. May be assigned as crew leader of street repair crew, in repairing of streets using equipment such as air compressors, jack hammers, tampers and pavement saws. Assist in the control of snow and ice by using snow plow, salt, or sand truck spreader. Assist in the clean-up of damaged trees and buildings during or after storms. May be required to assist other divisions in performing their required responsibilities, such as using front-loader or other equipment to get units out of the mud. May be called upon to put other areas of expertise to use in the accomplishment of tasks such as making barricades or assisting in construction of offices, forms for concrete or head walls in drainage ditches, as well as some welding. Have the ability to set up grade and use transit and level. Requirements Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years' experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Experience in the actual layout of new roads and operation of heavy equipment for road construction is preferred. Licenses and Certificates
Must possess a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver License or be able to obtain within six (6) months. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of:

Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds. Working Conditions
Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies. Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions. Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment.
