Overview

At RK, you will lead quality assurance efforts to ensure welding meet customer expectations and industry codes (ISO, AWS, AISC, ASME). You will act as the corporate standard bearer and guide continuous improvement across processes and projects.

You will carry out visual inspections, set up and validate weld procedures, maintain certification programs, and coordinate with suppliers and internal teams to resolve quality challenges. You have the authority to halt nonconforming work, develop corrective action plans, and supervise inspection teams.

Position Summary

The CWI shall inspect and certify that all welds meet customer expectations and ensure the overall quality of materials, products, and processes meet established internal and external standards throughout RK. The CWI will also act as the corporate representative for all standards used by RK (e.g., ISO, SIAC, ASME, AWS).

Role Responsibilities

  • Welding inspectors perform visual inspections on welded products and structures in progress and on completed jobs, searching for defects such as cracks, lack of fusion, porosity, etc. Magnification is used to identify defects that may weaken the joint, and inspections include dimensional checks against drawings.
  • Inspectors check weld machine setup and welding techniques on work in progress to ensure quality; they record test and inspection results.
  • Ensure RK products meet customer specifications and industry standards.
  • Inspect products to drawings provided by RK engineering group.
  • Create necessary documentation and checklists to fulfill customer requirements.
  • Develop, implement and maintain quality plans for purchased material, in-house processes, and field activities.
  • Ensure documented procedures for the quality management system are established and maintained.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and trainings.
  • Regularly evaluate performance data and trends and develop recommendations and action plans for improvement.
  • Provide technical assistance to all functional departments and suppliers in resolving quality-related problems.
  • Maintain welding qualification and certification programs, WPSs, PQRs, welder continuity logs and Customer Data Books.
  • Review customer requirements to ensure compliance at bid and award.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Corrective Action System and ensure root cause solutions are identified and implemented.
  • Communicate with external parties on matters relating to the quality management system.
  • Be responsible for code compliance and for the administration and implementation of the quality control system.
  • Train and direct quality control resources (inspectors) in the performance of inspections and related duties.
  • Ensure all work complies with contract drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Ensure all materials, equipment, and workmanship are inspected for compliance with specifications.
  • Identify quality control problems (non-conformances) through proper inspections and recommend or provide solutions.
  • Identify items for improvement and implement changes by coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers or internal departments.
  • Maintain work performance records, inspection records, and other related compliance items.
  • Monitor subcontractor work to ensure compliance with company standards, procedures, and codes, and issue reports on quality deficiencies and remediation requirements.
  • Develop punch lists and final inspection and acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure all certificates and final inspections are obtained prior to project close out.
  • Exercise the authority to halt work on nonconforming work and activities.
  • Local travel required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) certification required.
  • Experience in non-destructive examination (NDE) procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and requirements, including AISC, ISO 9001:2015, AWS D1.1 and D1.3.
  • Experience in operations involving structural steel, sheet metal, mechanical, and electrical assembly.
  • Awareness of welding programs and certifications offered by the American Welding Society (CAWI, CWI, SCWI); RK offers mentorship programs for employee development.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
  • Ability to analyze complex data with multiple variables to solve practical problems where standardization may be limited.

Minimum Physical Requirements and Accountability

  • Work outside, inside, and in dusty, noisy, and hazardous areas.
  • Work in high places, tight spaces, confined spaces and/or other adverse locations.
  • Climb, balance, squat, kneel and crouch.
  • Working knowledge of all trade materials and tools.
  • Ability to lift, move, and/or carry 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Prompt, punctual, and regular attendance during core business hours, with travel between offices and jobsites within the Denver Metro Area as needed.
  • All employees are accountable for safety and health and may stop work if an unsafe condition is present; notify a supervisor to correct hazards.
