Job Overview Substance Abuse Counselor

(Casual, 10-12 hrs/week). Responsible for providing counseling and coordinating counseling activities according to protocol for clients age 18+.

Responsibilities

Provide rehabilitation counseling to clients with a substance use disorder using multiple treatment modalities including Reinforcement-Based Treatment, an evidence-based approach that integrates motivational interviewing with structured work and social activities.

Create person-centered treatment plans and maintain updated plans according to COMAR regulations, JHU policies, and CARF standards.

Coordinate clients’ engagement in events consistent with treatment goals, including clinic appointments, NA/CA/AA meetings, employment appointments, and recreational activities.

Initiate and maintain contact with the client’s family members and/or significant other.

Coordinate access to community resources including job training, housing, recreation, and drug‑free social contacts.

Monitor caseload urine results and adjust treatment plans accordingly.

Enter client activity data.

Notify appropriate staff members of supplies and equipment needs that relate to client services.

Comply with reporting requirements of state and local agencies, the Department of Psychiatry, and CARF.

Serve as backup for other research and administrative duties.

Complete other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Clinical Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

At hiring, possess one or more credentials recognized by the MD Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists (e.g., Alcohol and Drug Trainee, CSC‑AD, CAC‑AD, LGADC, LCADC, LGPC, LCPC, or LCSW).

Maintain credentials throughout employment.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing counseling services to adults.

Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to interact effectively with clients, management, fellow staff, partners, and individuals from diverse cultures.

Computer proficiency.

Flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Excellent organizational skills for balancing multiple assignments.

Compensation and Benefits Hourly rate: $19.56 – $34.17 (target $55,000). Salary commensurate with experience.

Location Hybrid – Johns Hopkins Bayview (On‑site/remote). Days will vary.
