Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Quality, Medical Director of Children’s Surgery (MDCS) and Medical Director of Children’s Anesthesia (MDCA), this position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Children’s Surgery Verification Program (CSV), including its development, implementation, evaluation, and sustainment. This is a system-wide responsibility primarily focused on pediatric surgical patients at Children’s and Women’s Hospital but also responsibilities related to the appropriate care guidelines for children’s surgical care across the system (hospitals, clinics, and ASCs), as well as responsibility for community outreach related to children’s surgical care in accordance with the program requirement for the CSV program.

This position requires knowledge and skill in professional nursing theory and practice, children’s surgical care and pediatric systems, principles of teaching and learning, and quality assurance and performance improvement. This position will also prepare and maintain the hospital for ACS verification for the Children’s Surgery Verification program, prepare all filings, and coordinate all site visits related to the CSV program.

Demonstrates clinical excellence and input during patient care rounds, and prn in the children’s operating rooms to facilitate high-quality and efficient patient care delivery.

Lead Quality Management and Performance Improvement activities.

Develops quality filters, conducts audits, and performs case reviews.

Identifies trends and events, and outlines remedial actions to improve practice and reduce the potential for patient complications.

Participates in and contributes to research projects, including the analysis and dissemination of findings.

Supports the development of pediatric surgical systems at the community, state, regional, and national levels.

Oversees the collection, analysis, and use of operational and benchmarking data.

Recommends performance improvement targets and strategies.

Analyzes clinical practices to identify opportunities to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.

Facilitates cross-functional performance improvement teams.

Establishes process monitoring systems, tracks performance, and adjusts plans as needed to achieve desired outcomes.

Provides training to internal staff and maintains an ongoing education plan.

Identifies patient care, system, and/or process issues and trends.

Assists with chart reviews, data collection and preparation for case presentations.

Assists the Medical Director of Children’s Surgery and Medical Director of Children’s Anesthesia, and Nursing Administration in the investigation and resolution of issues, and performance improvement activities related to the delivery of children’s surgery services.

Collaborates with the Director of Surgical Quality, MDCS, MDCA, and other health care professionals in providing continuity of care to children’s surgery patients and families from Admission through Discharge as well as ambulatory clinics and ambulatory surgery centers.

Collaborates with operating room nursing educator(s) for nursing educational activities necessary to meet the American College of Surgeons Children’s Surgery Verification level II designation.

Acts as a consultant to internal and external staff while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Develops in collaboration with MDSA, MDCA a Community Outreach program.

Assists in the development/revision of administrative policies and protocol, guidelines/standards of care for children’s surgery in collaboration with appropriate disciplines.

Participates in departmental meetings; serves on relevant hospital committees as appointed or requested, and leads the Children’s Surgery Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) committee.

Also attends conventions, conferences, workshops, and other professional meetings to extend learning and to represent USA Health and Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, meeting the minimum standards set by the State of Alabama, four years of professional nursing experience. Licensure with the state of Alabama as a registered nurse. Master’s degree in nursing and pediatric experience are highly preferred.
