Overview
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research, supports teaching, learning and research by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. The unit provides routine EH&S services and supports university emergencies. Responsibilities
Identify, assess and monitor workplace and environmental hazards, including chemical, physical, biological, and radiological hazards, and recommend improvements to minimize risk. Conduct investigations by compiling and analyzing data on potential hazards, unsafe conditions, or environmental concerns, and share findings and recommendations. Provide technical advice and interpretation of local, state, and federal regulations to achieve compliance with government and university policies. Develop and conduct employee and student training, education, and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities and programs. Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific or allied field and one year of experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments/evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills. Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles, regulations, and university policies. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities. Effective oral and written communication with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly. Maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, permits). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of federal and state disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation programs; emergency management standards; management techniques; and functions of higher‑education institutions. Ability to identify hazards, recommend preparedness actions, maintain effective relationships, work independently, manage multiple projects, exercise judgment in stressful situations, communicate professionally, maintain records and reports, interpret codes and regulations, and use a variety of software applications. Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid California non‑commercial Class C driver’s license. Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, and desk‑based computer tasks. Occasional telephone use and handwriting. Rarely need to kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach above shoulder level, twist/bend/stoop, lift objects 40 lb or more, or operate foot/hand controls. Ability to maintain a valid non‑commercial California driver’s license and drive day or night. University will provide reasonable accommodation to employees with disabilities. Working Conditions
Required use of personal protective equipment as defined by job assignments. Rare exposure to extreme temperatures, electrical sources, radiation, noise, chemicals, biohazards, and allergens. Potential work in confined spaces or at heights of 10 feet or more. Work Standards
