About the Role:
The HR Generalist provides professional-level support across core human resources functions, with a primary focus on administering and overseeing leave of absence programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. This role serves as a key resource for staff questions related to policies and HR matters, while supporting documentation and operational efforts across all HR Centers of Excellence. The HR Generalist helps maintain accurate employee data, assists with audits, and contributes to employee programs and department-wide initiatives. This position works collaboratively across the HR team, offering backup and cross-functional support as needed, and is expected to manage sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism. Essential Functions
Administer and oversee leave of absence programs (FMLA, ADA, STD), ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while providing guidance to employees and managers throughout the process. Interpret and apply employment laws and internal policies related to leave and accommodations, exercising judgment in complex and sensitive cases. Organize and deliver training programs related to compliance, workplace policies, and professional development initiatives; monitor and track completion. Partner with leadership on employee engagement programs such as wellness initiatives, recognition, and service anniversary programs; evaluate program effectiveness and recommend enhancements. Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to employees and managers on HR policies, procedures, and best practices. Audit, analyze, and maintain personnel data in the HRIS; recommend process improvements to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance. Update and communicate HR policies and initiatives; recommend and implement process improvements across HR programs. Serve as back-up for benefits administration, providing oversight during absences and assisting with escalated employee questions, particularly in areas where leave programs intersect with benefits. Collaborate cross-functionally with HR colleagues on strategic projects and provide back-up support in areas requiring higher-level judgment. Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive employee or organizational information. Essential Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Minimum of 3 years of professional HR experience. Demonstrated expertise in FMLA, ADA, and state leave programs. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels. Strong understanding of HR generalist practices. High attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion. Comfortable navigating HRIS systems and Microsoft Office. Preferred Qualifications
HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, SPHR, etc.). Experience with ADP, LMS, and leave management systems. Knowledge of employee benefit programs, including pension plans
