Academic Counselor

Responsibilities The Academic Counselor plays a vital role in supporting the mission of the Upward Bound I Program by providing comprehensive academic counseling, educational support, and career readiness guidance to first-generation and low-income participants. This position requires a commitment to student success through collaboration with staff, families, and school partners, while also ensuring compliance with program requirements and contributing to grant-related initiatives. The Academic Counselor will engage in both day-to-day student support and program-wide activities, including after-school and weekend enrichment sessions, summer residential programming, and university-wide events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide educational counseling and academic support to project participants
Assist project director with identifying and selecting eligible first generation/low-come participants for the Upward Bound 1 Program, serving 4 schools in 2 parishes
Effectively communicate with staff, instructors, counselors, and families of participants to further the understandings of the participants’ needs on behalf of the project participants
Assess participants educational needs and develop strategies to assist participants with academic goals
Ability to earn three hours of compensatory time
for up to
20 Saturday mornings
to monitor the After-school activities for Lafayette Parish
Travel to target schools weekly to monitor after-school activities for assigned caseload
Ability to earn up to5hours of compensatory time
for each Saturday Enrichment academic sessions (Up to 8 Saturdays during the academic year)
Facilitate college and career-readiness workshops
Maintain and update student records and complete Annual Performance Report (APR) for student caseload
Assist in the preparation and writing of Upward Bound grant proposals
Attend meetings directly related to the operation of the regular UB programs and the Department of Special Services
Ability to participate in overnight travel for student events/field trips, trio conferences and trainings, and national Trio advocacy events
Must be available to work evenings, extended workdays, and weekends as needed for a the six-week summer residential program
Perform other responsibilities assigned by the Project Director, Associate Director, and the Trio Director
Attend commencement ceremony during the fall and spring semesters for University College
Qualifications: Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in counseling, education, business or public administration, communications, social work, psychology, or related field
Five years of experience working with low-income/first-generation/disabled students
Skills, Abilities, Etc.:
Knowledgeabout human development, mental and emotional needs, learning theories, and different counseling techniques
Knowledge working with students from diverse backgrounds
Knowledge of collegiate academic and financial procedure
Experience working with high school students from vulnerable backgrounds and personal experience overcoming similar barriers
