Director of Engineering Employment Type:
Full-Time | On-Site About GTI GTI is a rapidly growing manufacturer of mission-critical modular infrastructure, delivering high-quality steel-based structures for the energy, defense, and heavy industrial markets. With engineering and fabrication facilities in both Phoenix and Buffalo, GTI specializes in custom modular enclosures, containerized systems, and large-scale steel assemblies designed for deployment in extreme environments. Position Overview We are seeking a highly skilled Structural Engineer to join our engineering team and drive the design, analysis, and validation of modular steel structures. While experience in bridge or suspended structure design is highly valued, the core focus of this role is on modular fabrication, large welded assemblies, and containerized structures used in high-load industrial environments. This role requires a hands-on engineer who can translate concepts into production-ready designs, work closely with fabrication teams, and ensure structural integrity, safety, and code compliance. Key Responsibilities Structural Design & Analysis
Design modular steel structures, large welded assemblies, platforms, frames, and load-bearing systems for containerized and enclosure-based applications. Perform structural analysis using FEA software and hand calculations to evaluate static and dynamic loads, fatigue, seismic, and wind loading. Incorporate bridge engineering principles when applicable to long-span or suspended modular systems.
Engineering Documentation
Develop engineering drawings, design reports, and complete technical documentation using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Revit/BIM tools. Produce accurate bills of materials (BOMs), weld symbols, and fabrication-ready drawings.
Manufacturing Collaboration
Partner with fabrication, quality, and project teams to ensure structural designs are optimized for manufacturability, cost efficiency, and internal capability. Support shop drawing reviews, first article builds, and QA/QC testing for structural validation.
Field & Deployment Support
Conduct site assessments, participate in installation support, and perform structural evaluations of deployed modular systems.
Compliance & Standards
Ensure all designs comply with applicable structural codes and standards, including IBC, AISC, AWS D1.1, and applicable state regulations. Support initiatives toward ISO9001 certification and continuous improvement efforts.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred) 5+ years of experience in structural design for steel structures, welded assemblies, or modular systems Proficiency with FEA tools (RISA, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or similar) Experience with CAD platforms including SolidWorks and AutoCAD; familiarity with Revit or BIM tools preferred Strong understanding of structural design principles, welding/joint design, corrosion protection, and load path analysis Knowledge of relevant building codes and standards (IBC, AISC, AWS D1.1) Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills Preferred Qualifications PE licensure or the ability to obtain within 12 months Experience in modular construction, container-based fabrication, or bridge design Familiarity with design-for-manufacturing principles and fabrication workflows Experience collaborating directly with manufacturing and field installation teams Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus Why Join GTI Shape the future of modular steel infrastructure and energy systems Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package Collaborate across disciplines in a fast-paced, hands-on environment Contribute to projects impacting national defense, energy, and industrial infrastructure GTI is an equal opportunity employer.
