DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW University of California Press is a forward‑thinking scholarly publisher committed to influencing public discourse and challenging the status quo.

POSITION SUMMARY Working closely with the Publicity Director, the Publicist elevates the visibility of UC Press books and authors through media outreach, events, and author placement. The role crafts publicity campaigns, pitches op‑eds, secures reviews and interviews, builds author platform, leverages UC Press social media channels, and collaborates across editorial, marketing and sales to support the Press’s visibility, reputation and revenue goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Publicity (55%): Coordinate activities to promote authors and books, design promotional materials, track costs, and ensure alignment with editorial, sales and marketing.

Events (10%): Coordinate and amplify public and private author events.

Writing (25%): Write pitches, talking points, press releases and assist with social media content.

Outreach (10%): Build relationships with local, national and international media to increase exposure for authors and books.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least two (2) years of publicity experience

Knowledge of communication principles, media and marketing techniques

Highly motivated and goal oriented

Strong organizational skills and ability to track, prioritize and complete work within deadlines

Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Expertise in author or client relations and handling relationships with outside constituents

Solid knowledge of computer software programs (MS Word, Excel, Google Drive) and ability to learn new software and web‑based programs

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 2 years of experience in book publicity

Knowledge of book publishing and/or bookselling

EDUCATION Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training required

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS 5% occasional travel to conferences and to meet with media

SPECIAL CONDITIONS Required to live in California and report to work on‑site at UC's Office of the President in Oakland, CA at least two days per week (currently Wednesday and Thursday).

SALARY AND BENEFITS Grade 19 – $36.87 – $41.04/hour (approximately $77,000 – $85,700 annual)
