VRMNY is a leading ophthalmic retinal disease practice in the New York Metropolitan area (Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester), renowned internationally for its efficient, effective, and compassionate patient care. We are the largest retina practice in the region, seeking experienced professionals to join our team of top-rated retina specialists and eye doctors.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs preliminary screening for physicians including, but not limited to, ocular and medical history, visual acuity measuring, applanation tonometry, pupil and basic motility assessment.
  • Diagnostic imaging such as OCT, fundus photos, angiograms (basic knowledge ok, we are willing to train the right candidate)
  • Maintains and troubleshoots ophthalmic equipment (slit lamps, retina cameras)
  • Organizes and restocks exam rooms using inventory management system, as directed by supervisor
  • Obtaining pre-procedural consent forms and other related documentation.
  • Assists with image-archiving and storage
  • Help maintain and keep up with office flow
  • Recognizes problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic and related equipment. May need to assist in making minor adjustments and perform preventive maintenance in accordance with established procedures. Advises supervisor of malfunctions requiring repair by vendor.
  • Responsible for preparing materials if needed for audio-visual presentations, publications, lectures, and exhibits
  • Ensures patient safety is maintained at all times.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and sterile environment. Ensures adherence to infection control precautions. Adheres to HIPAA and Privacy & Security policies.
  • May be called upon to train and mentor others in ophthalmic photography techniques and protocols.
  • Obtains and maintains certification for research studies / open clinical trials, working directly with reading centers (willing to train as necessary)
  • Obtain study image certifications in the allotted time frame determined by the Clinical Studies Manager.
  • Read and understand study protocol guidelines for study images certification and submissions.
  • Maintains and updates training as new modalities and prototypes are added

Skills & Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, punctual, responsible, and reliable with strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of eye anatomy, retinal diseases, and ocular medications.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant or Ophthalmic Technician in a clinical setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing basic patient work-ups and basic slit lamp operation.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (Nextech MDI experience a plus).

Preferred Experience

  • Ophthalmic photographer experience preferred, but willing to train the ideal candidate.
  • Proficiency in performing F/A and/or ICG angiograms with Topcon and/or Optos cameras, OCT, using various filters to capture fundus photos
  • Phlebotomy Certification is a plus.
  • Current Retinal Angiographer Certification (CRA) or other ophthalmic related certifications such as COA or COT are a plus.
