Job Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator operates rolling stock and production machine centers to unload and load trucks, feed the mill, and process logs. The role emphasizes safety, productivity, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate production machine centers and equipment including front‑end loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, dozers, and other heavy equipment.
  • Perform mandatory visual inspections before use, checking for structural damage, oil leaks, and tire pressure.
  • Check fluid levels and maintain equipment after each use, including basic scheduled maintenance and keeping daily maintenance records.
  • Assist crane operators as needed and cross‑train on multiple machine centers and departments.
  • Keep the area around the mill clean and clear of debris and maintain a safe work area.
  • Float between departments to fill areas of greatest need and assist in training and mentoring new employees.
  • Apply Lock‑out/Tag‑out procedures and lean business practices.
  • Perform entry‑level laborer sawmill duties such as stacking boards, general cleanup, and tending machines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of operating heavy equipment.
  • Strong safety orientation and ability to follow safety procedures.
  • Dependable with a good attendance record.
  • Ability to streamline processes and cut waste, with lean techniques preferred.
  • 18+ years old, HS Diploma/GED required.
  • Physical capability to stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders; able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and a drug test with pre‑employment physical exam.
  • Safety‑sensitive position; impairment while working presents substantial risk.

Hours & Schedule

  • 40+ hours a week.
  • Shift work and/or weekends.
  • Full‑time.

Salary & Benefits

  • Pay: $20–$30 per hour.
  • FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt.
  • Full benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, long‑term disability, and 401(k) with match.
