Overview

A Chiller Technician is a skilled professional responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial and industrial chiller systems and associated equipment. A Chiller Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of HVAC systems in commercial and industrial settings, combining strong technical skills, compliance adherence, and effective communication to deliver exceptional service.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Completion of an electrical apprenticeship (8,000 hours) or a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Preferred certifications include technical or trade school certification in HVAC, state HVAC or refrigeration licenses, manufacturer-specific training, and OSHA 30-Hour Certification.

Experience: minimum of 3-5 years as an HVAC technician with a focus on chiller systems, including hands-on experience with WSHP, pumps, RTUs, and SWUDs, and experience with commercial and industrial HVAC systems. Some positions require expertise in rebuilding centrifugal and/or screw chillers.

Required: The ability to effectively communicate in the English language. This includes the ability to understand the spoken and written word as well as speak in English.

Travel: 50%

Work Schedule & Travel

This position works between the hours of 6 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. May vary based on customer demands and can include, but is not limited to: nights, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Chiller technicians perform maintenance and repairs on various chiller types and refrigeration units, diagnosing issues with refrigeration circuits, compressors, evaporators, and condensers.
  • They also work on water source heat pumps, pumps, and rooftop units, overhaul equipment such as chiller tube bundles, heat exchangers, tower fans, gearboxes, and pumps, and install and repair pressure piping.
  • Rebuilding centrifugal chillers in accordance with EPA guidelines is also a responsibility.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing issues involves identifying mechanical and electrical malfunctions using diagnostic tools and techniques, diagnosing complex HVAC issues, and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical documents.
  • System monitoring and optimization includes conducting system performance tests, working with building automation systems (BAS) to monitor and adjust performance, and proactively identifying and preventing potential issues.
  • Compliance and safety: ensure systems are in peak operating condition, comply with safety and environmental regulations including EPA guidelines, adhere to licensing requirements, and complete safety training.
  • Customer service and support duties involve interacting professionally with customers to solve service issues, communicating effectively with clients and team members, and providing technical advice and guidance.
  • Record keeping and documentation includes maintaining accurate service records and completing required paperwork daily.
  • Inventory and tool management entails maintaining an organized inventory of parts, tools, and equipment, ensuring the availability of replacement components, and maintaining company vehicles and their stock.
  • Collaboration and training may involve assisting in training and supervising student workers and other mechanics, providing guidance and technical instruction, and offering technical guidance to junior technicians.
  • Strong technical expertise, encompassing knowledge of refrigeration cycles and principles, proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and control issues, familiarity with building automation systems, and the ability to read technical documents.
  • Experience with various chiller types and other HVAC equipment is necessary, as is knowledge of electrical theory.
