Job Title:
Special Education Teacher Moderate/Severe, Intellectual Disabilities (Self-Contained, Elementary)
Position Summary:
The Special Education Teacher for Moderate/Severe Intellectual Disabilities provides specialized instruction to elementary students with significant cognitive, adaptive, and developmental needs in a self-contained classroom setting. This teacher designs and implements individualized education programs (IEPs), creates a supportive and structured learning environment, and collaborates with families, related service providers, and general education staff to promote student growth in academic, social, communication, and life skills domains.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum
Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) aligned with state standards and student needs.
Provide direct instruction in academic, functional, and adaptive skills using evidence-based practices.
Differentiate curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse learning styles and levels.
Incorporate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, assistive technology, and sensory supports as appropriate.
Embed functional life skills, social-emotional learning, and community-based instruction into daily routines.
Classroom and Behavior Management
Maintain a structured, safe, and nurturing classroom environment conducive to learning.
Implement positive behavior support plans and proactive behavior management techniques.
Utilize data-driven strategies to monitor and adjust behavioral interventions.
Supervise paraprofessionals and support staff to ensure consistency and effectiveness in student support.
Collaboration and Communication
Collaborate with related service providers (speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, etc.) to integrate therapy goals into daily instruction.
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and goals.
Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop and review IEPs and participate in IEP meetings.
Coordinate with general education teachers to facilitate inclusion opportunities when appropriate.
Assessment and Documentation
Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
Maintain accurate records, progress reports, and compliance documentation.
Use data to inform instruction and modify teaching strategies to meet student needs.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification
Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field (Masters degree preferred).
Valid state teaching credential authorizing service to students with Moderate/Severe Disabilities or Intellectual Disabilities.
Authorization to teach English Learners preferred.
Experience and Skills
Experience teaching students with moderate/severe intellectual disabilities in a self-contained or specialized setting.
Knowledge of individualized instruction, functional curriculum, and adaptive skills training.
Proficiency with behavior management and data collection systems.
Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.
Commitment to inclusion, equity, and student-centered learning.
Work Environment:
This position is based in an elementary school setting within a self-contained special education classroom. The role involves frequent collaboration with multidisciplinary staff and families, implementation of individualized interventions, and supervision of instructional aides and support staff.
