This Avalanche Center Director position is located at the Payette Avalanche Center in McCall, Idaho. Navigate mountainous, backcountry avalanche terrain in harsh winter environments efficiently. Inspect and perform routine maintenance and services on weather station equipment and instruments. Conduct snow stability tests and record snowpack observations; apply professional knowledge of avalanche hazard mitigation procedures. Write avalanche-related articles for the public in local newspapers, magazines, and trade journals. Teach avalanche awareness classes to the general public using multimedia and public speaking. Evaluate National Weather Service products and observations to create daily mountain weather forecasts for avalanche advisories. This position involves supervisory duties of up to 20% of the time. Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Males born after 12-31-1959 must be registered for Selective Service or be exempt. Subject to a satisfactory background investigation and/or fingerprint check. Successful completion of a one-year probationary period unless previously served. Federal employees are required to have payments made by direct deposit.
