Position Summary

Barton Malow is seeking a qualified and experienced Energy Marshal (EM) to oversee the safe energization of all electrical equipment within the Construction Zone (CZ) on critical projects. The Energy Marshal will serve as the single point of responsibility for implementing and managing compliance with Barton Malows Electrical Safety Plan, the clients pre-energization procedures, and applicable equipment manufacturer requirements. This position plays a vital role in protecting both personnel and equipment by ensuring a controlled and compliant approach to all energized work. While the EM role is not necessarily a dedicated position, it may be assigned to an already employed qualified individual on-site and may allow for concurrent responsibilities when EM duties are not actively required.

Key Job Responsibilities

Serve as the single point of contact for all equipment energizations within the Construction Zone. Coordinate and implement the projects Electrical Safety Plan in full alignment with NFPA 70E, OSHA, client procedures, and manufacturer specifications. Approve and oversee all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities and ensure full compliance with reviewed and approved LOTO plans. Schedule and conduct pre-energization meetings at least 5 days in advance (or immediately for unplanned needs) to review critical steps and safety concerns. Assign and train Deputy Energy Marshals (DEMs) as needed for concurrent work, while maintaining full accountability for all DEM activities. Confirm that all personnel working on energized or locked out systems are Qualified Workers as defined by NFPA 70E, OSHA, or equivalent training. Provide final review and authorization for all energizations in the Construction Zone. Review single-line diagrams with relevant personnel to ensure proper understanding of system configurations and LOTO scopes. Confirm completion of all required client, manufacturer, and L3 inspections prior to energization. Oversee Foreign Object Debris (FOD) inspections before and after any energized work or re-entry into previously energized equipment. Ensure proper installation, maintenance, and replacement of tamper tags throughout pre-energization through the PFHO milestone. Restrict access to electrical equipment during energization and commissioning using approved safety barriers. Verify correct position of switches, breakers, transfer switches, grounding equipment, test switches, and terminal blocks in accordance with the energization plan. Oversee all GC-related electrical activities in the Operational Zone (e.g., busduct extensions, MV breaker operations), providing sole approval to the clients Operations team for circuit energization and de-energization.

Required Knowledge, Education, Experience, Skills, And Abilities

NFPA 70E Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices training is required. Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, occupational safety, construction management, or related field preferred. Minimum of 4 years of experience with electrical systems in construction, commissioning, or energy-related environments. Strong understanding of LOTO procedures, electrical testing, and energization processes. Experience working in high-reliability environments such as data centers, industrial energy systems, or critical infrastructure projects. OSHA 30 certification required. Familiarity with client-specific commissioning protocols is a plus. Must possess or be able to obtain current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Strong communication and coordination skills; ability to lead multi-trade pre-energization meetings and training.
