Overview Head Strength & Conditioning Coach role at University of Chicago. Twelve-month, full-time position responsible for the development and administration of individualized speed and strength conditioning programs for all varsity athletic teams to optimize performance.
Responsibilities Design and implement year-round strength training and conditioning programs for varsity teams in collaboration with head coaches.
Hire and supervise the strength and conditioning staff and coordinate programs for 20 varsity intercollegiate programs across pre-season, in-season, and off-season.
Schedule cardio and weight training spaces and sessions for varsity teams.
Motivate, monitor, and direct safe and effective training programs for team and individual workouts.
Teach proper technique for lifts and movement training.
Collaborate with athletic trainers to train teams and accommodate injured student-athletes.
Educate student-athletes on supplements, nutrition, sleep, and healthy living practices with guidance from the athletic training room.
Ensure safety, risk management, and injury prevention in accordance with NCAA legislation.
Contribute to wellness and injury prevention initiatives.
Communicate with coaches, sports medicine staff, administrators, and campus offices; provide wellness events and services.
Maintain documentation related to operations, department handbooks, and Sports Medicine Handbook, including reports on program status and injury trends.
Oversee maintenance and safe operation of strength and conditioning equipment; collaborate with facilities to acquire and maintain equipment.
Utilize performance technology and data analytics to assess and improve performance.
Mentor student-athletes to enhance strength and conditioning.
Support recruitment by meeting with potential student-athletes and families to discuss strength and conditioning philosophy and resources.
Engage in outreach activities such as open houses, camps, clinics, and public relations events.
Demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and foster a diverse environment.
Commit to ongoing professional development through clinics and workshops.
Maintain high ethical standards and professionalism; assist in all aspects of the varsity athletic training program with moderate direction.
Abide by NCAA, UAA, and UChicago regulations, policies, and procedures.
Provide extra support for students outside normal hours, including tutorials and counseling as needed.
Participate in staff meetings and events.
Perform other related work as needed.
Education and Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: College or university degree in a related field.
Work Experience Minimum: 5–7 years of relevant experience.
Certifications and Preferences Certified in strength and conditioning by NSCA, CSCS, or CSCCA; CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required.
Bachelor’s degree in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Experience coaching or interning in strength and conditioning; prior experience in higher education; supervisory experience; experience with strength and conditioning software/technologies.
Basic knowledge of NCAA DIII rules and sports medicine best practices; experience with data analytics and performance tracking.
Technical Skills Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to analyze movement and provide corrections.
Preferred Competencies Ability to set annual goals, commitment to professional development, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Working Conditions Twelve-month, full-time position with flexible hours including early mornings and evenings.
Physical requirements: lifting 50–99 lbs; bending, crouching, stooping; travel to various on- and off-campus locations; extensive computer use.
