This role performs and records echocardiology diagnostic tests. The sonographer obtains information about normal and abnormal anatomy used to diagnose disease. Ensures echo exams are of acceptable quality and records results. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Primary responsibilities include reviewing patient charts and previous study results. Selects appropriate equipment and explains procedures to patients to elicit cooperation. Interviews patients and/or caregivers to gather and record pertinent information. Assists patients with proper positioning during exams. Moves a transducer over specific areas of the body and observes displays to detect pathologies. Determines if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes and completes reports after each exam. Maintains competency in the use and delivery of contrast agents per department policy. Captures images and manages them in the system used for documentation. Discusses test results with physicians or other personnel as needed. Maintains equipment in working order and replenishes supplies as necessary. Performs related clerical duties, such as answering phones and scheduling appointments. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field. Supports continuous quality improvement efforts to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction. Assists in the clinical training of new staff and maintains positive working relationships. The position requires the ability to stoop, bend, reach, and manually operate equipment. Ability to work with a keyboard, manage data, and check documents for accuracy is required. Work requires the ability to stand for extended periods and position patients as necessary. Lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds and carrying objects up to 10 pounds is necessary. Exposure to infectious diseases exists, although risks are minimized through safety procedures.
