Head of Network Engineering | Global Alternative Investment Firm
[Up to c. $400k Comp Package | Hybrid Working]
Role Overview We’re supporting a leading global investment firm that is scaling its technology function to deliver resilient, high-performance infrastructure for complex trading environments. As part of continued growth across infrastructure and platform engineering, the firm is hiring a Head of Network Engineering to shape its next generation of global connectivity. This is a strategic and hands‑on leadership position, responsible for defining and executing the network roadmap across trading, research, and enterprise environments. You’ll lead a high‑calibre team of engineers, architecting resilient, ultra‑low‑latency systems that serve as the foundation for the firm’s buy‑side technology platform. Success in this role means striking the balance between performance and stability - scaling infrastructure that supports a diverse trading landscape while embedding automation, security, and observability at every layer of the stack.
Key Responsibilities
Own and evolve the global network engineering strategy, ensuring alignment between infrastructure capabilities, trading objectives, and long‑term business growth
Lead and mentor a distributed team of network engineers, instilling engineering excellence and a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
Design and implement scalable, secure, and low‑latency network architectures to support multi‑asset trading, market data, and research workloads across regions
Optimise connectivity between data centres, co‑locations, and public cloud environments, ensuring deterministic performance and fault‑tolerant design
Champion automation and Infrastructure‑as‑Code, leveraging frameworks such as Ansible, Terraform, and Python‑based tooling to streamline provisioning and configuration
Drive observability and SRE‑aligned practices to ensure visibility, reliability, and self‑healing network operations
Integrate security and compliance controls seamlessly into network design, supporting global regulatory requirements and information assurance objectives
Partner with trading, systems, and security teams to deliver consistent, high‑throughput infrastructure for critical workloads
Manage vendor and carrier relationships, ensuring effective commercial negotiations, optimal service delivery, and future‑proof technology selection
Oversee budget planning and lifecycle management, identifying opportunities for optimisation and strategic reinvestment in emerging technology
What You’ll Bring
Deep experience in network architecture, design, and operations within a buy‑side, hedge fund, or other trading‑intensive environment
Demonstrable leadership ability with a record of building and scaling high‑performing technical teams
Background supporting high‑availability systems in regulated financial environments, ensuring compliance with security and audit frameworks
Strong understanding of low‑latency trading infrastructure, including market data distribution, multicast, and network timing technologies (e.g., PTP, Arista EOS, Cisco NX‑OS)
Technical proficiency across core routing and switching, BGP, MPLS, VPNs, and SD‑WAN, with proven success delivering secure hybrid environments
Expertise in automation and infrastructure engineering - using Python, Ansible, or Terraform to deliver policy‑driven, repeatable network deployments
Experience working across cloud networking and on‑prem architectures, with hybrid connectivity between data centres and AWS/Azure
Familiarity with observability stacks and network telemetry (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, NetBox, or similar tools)
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to senior stakeholders
(Preferred) Industry certifications such as CCIE, JNCIE, or equivalent senior‑level qualifications
