Job Summary Labor One is a Structural Welder position in ship repair project in San Diego, CA. 4 years welding experience required.

Job Description This position is responsible for accomplishing production welding on a ship or in a shop to support structural repairs and modernization of marine vessels including US Naval Vessels, Military Sealift Command, and commercial ships.

Qualifications and Experience

Comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence.

Working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment naming convention.

Physically and medically capable to wear required PPE under OSHA standards.

Effectively confer job related information to the supervisor.

Understand SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW.

Certified in all positions: SMAW Full Penetration with permanent backing (ceramic and metal), FCAW Full Penetration with permanent backing (ceramic and metal), GMAW Full Penetration with permanent backing (ceramic and metal).

Interpret drawings, specifications, and Navy/MSC/ABS standards manuals.

Working knowledge of welding equipment and work processes used in marine welding.

Operate and care for welding equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools.

Perform basic arithmetic calculations.

Understand US customary and metric measurement system.

Up to four (4) years of welding experience in a related field.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communicate with and provide direction to the welding helper and fire watch as needed.

Do not commence hot work until the area is ready in accordance with fire prevention protocol.

Arrive at the designated work site at the assigned time and end the shift as directed by the schedule and your supervisor.

Work shifts and overtime as assigned.

Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.

Comply with OSHA standards and the shipyard’s best safety practices.

Keep work area clean and safe at all times.

Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required.

Comply with the Company’s “Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy.”

Carry out written or oral instructions and resolve unexpected events.

Work Tasks Include

Prepare work area for hot work, including checking hot work certifications.

Prepare surfaces for production welding by inspecting joints and cleaning as required.

Inspect welds for defects and confer with supervision before correcting deficiencies.

Document existing conditions.

Become familiar with applicable safety requirements before commencing work.

Ensure Lock-out Tag-out has been correctly accomplished.

Work Environment The shipyard environment varies from normal office conditions to outdoor work. Precautions for extreme weather, confined areas, mechanical lifts, and noise are required. PPE is mandatory.

Physical Demands Must be able to tour all vessels, piers, docks and work sites. Repeated standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and occasional sitting. Lifting and pushing/pull requirements as listed.

Physical Requirements

Lift 75 lbs on an occasional basis.

Lift 20 lbs on a frequent basis.

Prolonged standing (2-3 hours).

Climb safe manner; ladders, scaffolding, ramps.

Work at various heights and positions.

Good balance on uneven surfaces.

Handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools.

Access work areas through 18” x 36” openings.

Respond to visual, verbal, and audible commands.

Work at heights above 12’ from ladders, scaffolding, and manlifts.

Fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, to the side, and down.

Perceive attributes of objects/materials by hand.

Turn head side to side and body at waist.

Shift and Compensation 3rd Shift, 40 hours a week with OT approval. Testing 2G/3G Flux Core (2 plates only).
