Mars Petcare is seeking an HSE Specialist to join our exciting pet food business at a manufacturing plant in Aurora, Nebraska. We focus our attention on the unique needs of cats and dogs. Key responsibilities
Ensure the site maintains a continuous state of compliance with HSE company standards and governmental regulations.
Assist in developing and implementing all company HSE Standards as they apply to the site.
Execute proper management of the site's hazardous waste management activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and company standards.
Develop and deploy site-specific HSE programs and plans to position the site as a best-in-class organization.
Deliver training and coaching to establish clear understanding/engagement by all site associates on HSE expectations.
Ensure investigation of all HSE-related incidents, utilizing specific tools to find the root cause and identify actions to prevent recurrence. Drive implementation and completion of corrective actions, including actions developed from other site incidents.
Serve as an HSE technical expert in conjunction with the site HSE Manager, providing technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function, including capital project safety, environmental review, and risk management associated with non-capital modifications.
Ability to influence where direct lines of authority do not exist.
Promote a positive safety culture through effective safety awareness and incentive programs.
Lead and ensure the site emergency response team (ERT) has the tools, skills, and knowledge to respond effectively to site HSE emergencies.
Lead site efforts to measure and improve Industrial Hygiene Risk. This includes but is not limited to ergonomics, dust, noise, and chemical exposure. Coordinate all necessary IH and audiometric monitoring.
Manage a variety of HSE Systems like Keytroller, Forklift Speed Zones, POKA, Weaver Apps, Enablon data entry and PPE Vending Machines.
Manage the overall site Contractor Safety program to reduce risk associated with construction and trade contractor activity. Ensure project managers are accountable for proper management of contractors.
Oversee a variety of HSE Programs with responsibilities related to equipment inventories, inspections, training, risk reduction, and improvement projects.
Assist with the execution of site security requirements to meet corporate standards.
Support the Mars Global Security Program by implementing standards and best practices.
Manage Risk Management activities associated with asset conservation and property loss control. Drive timely corrective actions to third‑party loss risk assessments and audits.
Work with third‑party risk control experts to ensure compliance with company standards on new projects. Support audit efforts to maintain and improve favorable insurance ratings.
Ability and willingness to occasionally flex work hours to support site needs, including night and weekend hours.
Responsible for managing the internal audit program.
Participate in the Safety Pillar Team and initiatives.
Participate in other site programs as needed to support the site's overall success.
Provide backup coverage for the site HSE Manager as required.
Education & Professional Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) is required.
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an EHS field is preferred.
Professional Certifications are preferred (GSP, ASP, CSP).
Knowledge / Experience
Ability to interact with site‑level manufacturing/business management and regulatory agencies is required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, including a high level of comfort in developing and delivering training and motivational presentations to all levels of the organization.
Strong HSE regulatory knowledge and expertise (EPA, OSHA, DOT) is required.
1‑5 years experience managing safety and environmental programs or projects in a manufacturing environment or school‑related program is required.
Basic knowledge of food manufacturing is desired.
Demonstrated leadership in leading an HSE program/system in a manufacturing environment is required.
Experience with hazard recognition, behavioral‑based safety, and job hazard analysis is desired.
Strong technical ability is desired – computer systems experience, ability to learn.
