Position Summary As a Principal Architect with Genentech, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the architectural future of a dynamic campus encompassing 50+ buildings and 6 million square feet of space. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you’ll bring technical leadership and innovative expertise to ensure designs are safe, sustainable, code‑compliant, and aesthetically enriching for diverse stakeholders.

Core Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership and accountability for architectural designs on capital projects at South San Francisco and other Genentech sites.

Engage actively in upgrades to 50+ buildings (~6 M sq ft) and design the planning of new buildings.

Act as a respected industry expert, influencing external network and guiding design standards for safe, code‑compliant, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing environments.

Serve as a subject‑matter expert, advising external design consultants on architectural design.

Coordinate with project managers, design vendors, and alliance partners to provide design and technical guidance.

Collaborate with REWE and PTT groups to influence and align on design standards across the network.

Teach and direct project managers and partners on industry practices and new technologies.

Present business drivers and site strategies to upper management and at industry events.

Demonstrate leadership, strategic agility, and conflict‑resolution skills; build positive working relationships internally and externally.

Participate in process‑improvement initiatives and complete Genentech site training.

Technical Design Guidance

Support execution of projects ($.5 M–$10 M+) providing input on code compliance, materials, and building aesthetics.

Balance aesthetics, performance, cost, and maintainability with innovative design solutions.

Ensure adherence to engineering manuals and coordination with key customers and stakeholders.

Manage oversight of additional architectural SMEs as required.

Align project designs with Roche / Genentech site‑specific standards.

Design Standard Leadership

Lead an architectural sub‑team consisting of alliance firm lead architects and Genentech stakeholders.

Develop and review strategies for upgrading campus design standards.

Site Standards Management

Develop, update, and maintain site‑specific architectural design standards supported by an online portal.

Engage site leaders, operations, and customer groups to incorporate new industry technologies.

Professional Development

Engage with Roche Engineering Network and outside industry organizations.

Attend conferences, present at industry events, and apply learned skills to projects.

Support Design Engineering & Construction Services process‑improvement and LEAN initiatives.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or equivalent.

Registered Architect licensed in California.

10+ years of experience in facility/interior design, at least 3 years in life‑science laboratory and GMP/biotech settings.

Experience leading multiple complex capital projects in pharmaceutical or related industries.

Experience with cGMP‑compliant design highly desirable.

LEED certification and/or project‑management or LEAN/Six Sigma certification.

Excellent communication, presentation, leadership, interpersonal, conflict‑resolution, and negotiation skills.

Strong knowledge of project design and construction; skilled in Office and Google Suite.

Dependable, detail‑oriented, self‑starter capable of working with minimal supervision.

Salary Based on primary location in California, the expected salary range is $135,700–$251,900 USD annually. Pay will be determined by experience and qualifications. A discretionary annual bonus may be available.
