Employee will serve as a Pathology Specialist within the Pathology and Laboratory Department at the VA Boston Healthcare System in West Roxbury, MA.
Overview Open for 10/14/2025 – 10/21/2025. Salary: $88,226 – $138,763 per year. Grade: GS 9 – 11. Full‑time, permanent.
Responsibilities
Coordinate surgical pathology functions, working independently or with pathologists.
Oversee grossing, frozen section, and autopsy suites, ensuring proper tissue processing.
Monitor workflow, design and implement process improvements.
Maintain up‑to‑date anatomical pathology protocols.
Determine triage of biopsy specimens, applying appropriate additional tests.
Provide quality assurance oversight of technical work.
Prepare work areas for inspections and participate in regulatory, safety and accreditation inspections.
Assist in teaching residents and medical students.
Develop policies and procedures for autopsy, specimen grossing and frozen section procedures.
Perform examination and processing of pathology specimens.
Accession biopsy and surgical specimens, ensuring proper requisition completion.
Address clinician/provider inquiries concerning autopsy and surgical cases.
Assist in gross specimen conferences, e.g., autopsy or brain cutting conferences.
Assist pathologists, residents and students in completing autopsies and lifting bodies from stretcher to table.
Assist in collection of fluids or tissue specimens for approved research projects.
Ensure the morgue and cutting room are properly supplied and maintain inventory.
Develop, review and revise procedures in anatomic pathology.
Ensure anatomic pathology equipment is functioning properly.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
BS in an allied health science or related field (GS‑9) or Master’s or Ph.D. in Pathology or related specialty (GS‑11).
One year of specialized experience in pathology grossing, frozen section or autopsy suite, or equivalent combination of education and experience (GS‑9).
For GS‑11, one year of specialized experience in coordinating surgical pathology functions and working in grossing, frozen section and autopsy suites.
ASCP certification preferred.
