Overview Under direction, is responsible for professional dental and managerial work of average difficulty in mental health institutions, correctional institutions, public health clinics, educational institutions, and related settings and in staff assignments; and performs related work as required. An employee in this class is responsible for clinical, educational, and/or professional administrative dental work performed in various facilities, institutions, and/or settings. Incumbents may be assigned a variety of functions such as clinical dentist, dental director for a region or at an institution or facility, or all dental services statewide.
Qualifications
Graduation from an approved school of dentistry.
Valid/current license to practice dentistry in the State of Tennessee.
Criminal background check required.
Responsibilities
Provides general dental services to patients to prevent or eliminate dental disease. Plan and coordinate public health dental programs and provide innovative leadership to improve oral health by utilizing scientifically proven methods to prevent dental disease.
Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, or other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
Assess information from medical history, patient and/or parent or legal guardian and medical consults, concerning information as it relates to patient treatment. Obtain information from internal or external stake holders/partners to develop, implement, and prioritize programs based on the information received.
Ensure all records, reports and correspondence are completed and processed within the required timeframe. Conduct meetings to discuss work status and plan future work.
Monitor inventory equipment and/or supplies to ensure the unit has the necessary equipment and/or supplies to perform functions. Submit request for expenditures to management for approval.
Recruit, interview, select, hire, and promote employees in an organization. Assign, train, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff and their work.
Ensure compliance with the rules and regulations prescribed by the Commissioner and the County Board of Health essential to the control of preventable diseases and maintenance of dental health.
Communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. Providing guidance and expert advice to internal and external partners.
