Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials
*Willingness to work in the selected EPC firm’s office (Houston/Baton Rouge), Baton Rouge area (project site) and travel domestically and internationally as needed.*
We’re looking for a Senior Instrument & Controls Engineer to join our large capital project team on the U.S. Gulf Coast. This is a key technical leadership role within the owner’s project team, responsible for driving all aspects of instrumentation and controls (I&C) design and execution across a major industrial capital project.
You’ll partner closely with EPC firms and the main automation contractor to ensure high-quality, on-time I&C deliverables. The role offers the opportunity to move between the EPC office and the project site in Baton Rouge as the project progresses from engineering through commissioning.
What You’ll Do
Lead the instrumentation and controls scope throughout the entire project lifecycle — from FEL through startup and commissioning.
Provide expert-level guidance on process instrumentation, automation systems, and control strategies to ensure alignment with company and industry standards.
Oversee the main automation contractor’s work, ensuring consistency, quality, and contractual compliance across multiple project areas.
Support the Project Manager in contract creation and execution related to I&C scope.
Ensure the technical quality, integrity, and operability of I&C system design, installation, and pre-commissioning activities.
Serve as the primary I&C technical expert for the project team, EPC partners, and company leadership.
Conduct technical reviews, equipment selection, and safety and operability assessments for all major I&C systems.
Monitor contractor performance, ensuring quality assurance in engineering, fabrication, installation, and pre-commissioning.
Ensure project compliance with laws, regulations, and company standards.
Communicate effectively with project leadership and stakeholders to maintain alignment and resolve technical challenges.
What You’ll Bring Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in chemical or electrical engineering.
15+ years of instrumentation and controls engineering experience within chemical, petrochemical, or EPC environments.
At least 10 years working on large capital projects.
Minimum 5 years overseeing and collaborating with a main automation contractor on large industrial projects.
Strong knowledge of DCS systems, process instrumentation, and automation integration.
Excellent communication and presentation skills with experience interfacing with company leadership.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as project needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working at an operating chemical or petrochemical facility, including on DCS upgrade projects.
Large project experience involving heavy modularization.
Why This Role Stands Out
Strategic Influence:
Work directly with the owner’s project team and automation partners to shape I&C execution strategy.
Project Variety:
Engage in both EPC office and on-site phases, gaining full lifecycle exposure.
Technical Leadership:
Lead advanced instrumentation and control systems for major capital investment programs.
High-Impact Work:
Contribute to large-scale, complex projects that drive long-term industrial growth and innovation.
