The City of Long Beach is inviting applications for the position of Construction Inspector I–II. This role is essential to ensure that all construction projects for the City comply with plans, specifications, and regulations. Application Dates

Current openings exist in the Harbor, Long Beach Utilities, Public Works, and Airport Departments. This classification is also utilized in the Airport Department. Responsibilities
Inspect construction projects across various asset classifications, including utilities, streets, stormwater, facilities, community, tidelands, ports, and miscellaneous improvements. Ensure contractor work complies with plans, specifications, and safety regulations. Prepare accounting and progress reports related to contractor progress payments. Maintain communication with contractors, tenants, property owners, and City departments regarding change orders, cost of change orders, and project progress. Inspect materials (asphalt, concrete, subgrade, steel reinforcement, concrete forms) and authorize concrete placement. Inspect installation of underground pipelines, conduits, cables, and telephone cables. Inspect roadway, curb, gutter, catch basin, manhole, comfort station, alley, street, storm drain, and sewer components. Inspect waterfront construction, including pile driving, dredging, foundation, structural steel erections, and wharf construction. Inspect railroad installations and ensure gas pipeline projects comply with Department of Transportation regulations. Inspect building renovations of public facilities for ADA, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Interact with customers, private contractors, and other City departments regarding meter set and gas service locations. Design and initiate customer billing for services provided by the Energy Resources Department. Position Description

Option A
– Four years of paid, full‑time equivalent experience in supervising or journey‑level construction, or inspecting street, road, bridge, building, or other public works projects requiring knowledge of contract administration, safety, earthwork, shoring, underground construction, wharf construction, or railroad construction. Option B
– Four years of paid, full‑time equivalent experience in utility construction/maintenance including natural gas, water, and sewer pipeline and/or wharf construction, or closely related work requiring knowledge of contract administration, safety, earthwork, shoring, underground construction, wharf construction, or railroad construction. Educational Substitution
– Satisfactory completion of college‑level coursework in construction technology, construction management, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering may be substituted for up to two (2) years of required experience on a year‑to‑year basis in either Option A or B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of engineering drawings and pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Knowledge of progress payments, change orders, and construction contracts. Ability to read plans and specifications and to communicate orally and in writing. Proficiency with personal computer and business software such as Microsoft Office. Willingness to work during emergencies, stand‑by rotations, weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime as required. Desirable Qualifications
International Code Council certifications in pre‑stressed concrete, reinforced concrete, structural steel and bolting, masonry, welding, and combination building. Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and American Welding Society (AWS) certifications. California Water Environment Association (CWEA) or State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) water distribution and treatment certificate. Thirty hours of OSHA safety training certification or similar OSHA certification. Selection Procedure
Applicants will be invited to a written examination. A minimum rating of 70 must be attained to pass the examination. Veterans, disabled veterans, and other eligible candidates will receive additional score credits in accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38. Benefits
