Position:
Legislative Counsel
Department:
Municipal Assembly
Location:
City Hall – 632 W 6th Ave, Anchorage, AK
Hours:
Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, some evenings
Responsibilities
Serve as legal advisor to the Assembly, attending regular and special meetings.
Provide legal assistance during proceedings on legislative issues and procedural matters.
Prepare ordinances, resolutions and related memoranda for Assembly consideration.
Advises on legal issues in legislative, administrative, and quasi‑judicial activities such as Board of Adjustment appeals.
Advises the Municipal Clerk on election matters and business license regulation.
Represent the Clerk, the Assembly, and its members in occasional litigation where named as parties.
Perform other required duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
Seven (7) years of professional legal work experience with the Municipality of Anchorage or equivalent elsewhere.
Admitted to the Alaska Bar Association or ability to be admitted within six (6) months.
Experience in legislative drafting, interpretation and advising local governing bodies.
Litigation experience in administrative, trial, and appellate levels on municipal and government law issues.
Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License required at time of hire.
