THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is looking for a Vice President, Finance (VP, Finance) who will be a vital senior leadership team member, playing a critical role in driving the organization toward its goals and financial success. The VP, Finance will be a strategic partner and a doer with an ownership mentality. The VP, Finance, will be detail oriented and work in an autonomous environment to manage/lead all aspects of financial and accounting activities, as well as advise on major economic objectives, policies, and opportunities, and effectively work with cross functional teams. This position reports to the Managing Partner/Chief Investment Officer (CIO), with one direct report: Operations Manager. JOB DEFINITION
The highly skilled VP, Finance will oversee all financial operations for the growing family office, ensuring optimal management of resources, compliance, and long-term financial strategy. This role will work closely with senior leadership and portfolio companies and provide data-driven insights that inform key decision-making enabling the business to seize growth opportunities, create accurate forecasts, and mitigate risks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial management, regulatory compliance, tax accounting, investment valuation, and fund accounting. SKILLS
The VP, Finance will be a humble hands-on leader heavily involved in managing a complex, diversified portfolio and responsible for the day-to-day financial, operational, and accounting affairs of the company. Responsibilities will be broad and include engaging a collaborative team, as well as helping the company’s leadership build a roadmap for a successful future. Regulatory & Tax Compliance:
Ensure compliance with all relevant tax regulations and filings, including working with external tax advisors to manage tax strategies for the family office, family members, the family foundation, and its investments. Manage regulatory requirements of various state and federal bodies, ensuring timely and accurate filings and adherence to evolving regulations. Financial Reporting & Accounting:
Oversee and manage the general ledger and records for the family and the firm, ensuring accuracy in all financial statements. Manage the accounting of the public and private asset portfolios. Prepare internal financial reports and supervise the tax filing process. Treasury Management & Operations:
Create and maintain necessary control policies and procedures. Oversee treasury function and monitor inflows of cash and other securities. Supervise the management of third-party software and services related to spend management, banking, finance, and IT & cybersecurity. Investment Monitoring & Valuation:
Monitor and value investments across various asset classes (public markets, real estate, direct investments, alternatives, etc.), ensuring proper valuation and reporting in line with best practices and industry standards. This includes preparing monthly net worth statements and providing regular updates to senior leadership on the performance of investments. Cash Flow Forecasting & Budgeting:
Develop and implement financial plans, cash flow forecasts, and annual budgets for the family office, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and a strategic approach to liquidity management. Collaboration with Portfolio Companies:
Partner with management teams of portfolio companies to ensure proper accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. Advise on best practices for financial performance, cost management, and growth. Fund Accounting:
Oversee fund accounting processes, ensuring accurate recording and reporting of capital calls, distribution waterfalls, and management fees. Work closely with external fund administrators as needed. Financial Strategy & Planning:
Support senior leadership in strategic financial planning, including advising on risk management, capital allocation, and investment decisions. Leadership and Management: Commitment to high ethical and professional standards; strong personal and professional integrity and confidentiality. Establish credibility and build strong relationships with internal team, external advisors (investment managers, lawyers, accountants), and banking institutions. Drive performance and hold the team accountable by setting clear expectations and providing regular feedback and guidance, establishing a performance management system that tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) and ties them to individual and team goals. Establish and refine processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of family office operations and services. Ability to articulate and explain legal terminology and concepts as well as tax complexities. Expand and maintain a strong network of external partners; monitors, evaluates, and advises on the fiscal performance of entities against budgets and forecasts. BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 10 years+ of accounting, financial, and income tax experience with a strong understanding of investment management principles. Experience supporting a family office or family enterprise, and/or private equity and venture capital firms with an accounting background in a multi-entity environment (complex organization structures). Must operate with integrity, and an ability to maintain confidentiality of Family matters. A doer, “roll-up your sleeves” leader with an entrepreneurial spirit and disciplined work ethic. Technical expertise in tax, accounting and investments, alongside critical soft skills for navigating dynamics and relationships. Financial acumen and analysis skills including P&L, budget creation, pricing strategies, and the ability to create accurate revenue forecasting models. Energetic with the ability to read the room, handle private and confidential information with discretion. Merger and acquisition experience is a plus. Familiarity with various investment vehicles and strategies is a plus. Executive presence with exemplary communication skills and interpersonal skills, including executive presence and the ability to establish and maintain rapport and trust with stakeholders at a variety of levels, both internal and external to the company. Must be intellectually curious, and a high achiever who is passionate and organized with a mentality to get it done. Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, or business is required, and a master’s degree in business, finance, or management is highly preferred.
