Traveling Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator (Traveling) will operate a variety of equipment, such as backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, screeners, excavators, and other heavy equipment at Clean Harbors facilities or customer locations. The role requires 95% travel across the 48 contiguous states, with a typical travel rotation of six weeks out on a project and one week off.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base pay range: $24.00 to $28.00 per hour, DOE.
  • Per diem available while traveling; single-occupancy rooms with kitchenette provided at long‑term hotel properties.
  • Prevailing wage and overtime available depending on the job site.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, including excavators (60k lb or up), front‑end loaders (3 con or up), articulating dump trucks (25 con or up), bulldozers (150 hp or up), motor graders, soil compactors, articulated water trucks, compact loaders, compact excavators, and other construction equipment.
  • Maintain 10+ years of experience operating this type of equipment.
  • Operate requisitioned heavy‑duty forklifts as required.
  • Ensure equipment is never operated in an unsafe manner and complies with Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork for waste tracking.
  • Perform occasional labor work.
  • Comply with all safety practices, policies, and processes and act in a safe manner at all times.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of previous experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience operating bull dozers and excavators required.
  • Previous construction experience (earthworks) preferred.
  • Must be able to travel 95–100% with a schedule of six weeks traveling followed by one week home, paid.
  • Current valid driver license with a clean driving record required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted and walk several miles per day under varying site conditions with rugged terrain and steep slopes.
  • Requires standing, sitting, climbing, pulling, pushing, carrying, grasping, reaching, crawling, stooping, crouching, and balance; walking and standing for extended periods; speaking, listening, understanding, and writing English.
  • Maintains a clean organized work environment and personal appearance; facial hair must comply with company respiratory protection facial hair policy.

Travel

Travel 95–100% of the time across the 48 contiguous states. All travel expenses are covered. Per diem and long‑term hotel accommodations are provided.
