as an Executive Underwriter in our dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team, building the Middle Market Life Sciences Industry Practice. The role focuses on underwriting and developing profitable multi‑line life sciences business for mid‑size companies (R&D stage through $2B insured revenue), across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health, and related sectors.

Salary Range:
$81,000 / yr – $269,000 / yr (base pay)
Base pay range includes additional compensation based on skill, experience, and location. Candidates should discuss full compensation with recruiter.
Responsibilities – Executive Underwriter
New business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, and underwrite submissions; assess risks, determine premium and policy terms, and secure underwriting approval as needed.
Service accounts: coordinate with Liberty Account Analyst and Client Service Managers to support insureds and uphold Liberty’s value proposition.
Manage portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients: develop strong relationships, facilitate marketing, and maintain a high‑quality pipeline.
Actively identify and solicit pipeline of opportunities for individual and team success.
Articulate key coverage differences with high detail in this specialized niche space.
Maintain knowledge of key legal cases, legislation, and regulation impacting underwriting expertise.
Share technical expertise and provide external thought leadership.
Mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and partners.
Provide significant input into business and marketing planning, including data‑driven portfolio analysis.
Participate in projects and initiatives to grow Liberty Life Sciences Industry Practice.
Model effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners (Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in North America).
Qualifications
Degree in Business, Risk Management, Scientific Field, or equivalent (typically required).
Minimum of 7 years (10 + years) of progressive underwriting or related business experience.
Minimum of 5 years of Life Sciences underwriting experience.
CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
Proven analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks and advanced knowledge of Life Sciences insurance products, pricing, and market dynamics.
Track record of developing and underwriting profitable Life Sciences business.
Effective communication of complex analyses, both written and oral.
Interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
Comprehensive understanding of complex underwriting issues and ability to define and implement necessary processes/workflows.
