POSITION SUMMARY
Middle school head coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.
Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES General
Professional Development and Leadership: Stay current with sport-specific literature, attend clinics and workshops.
Rules and Regulations: Study rules of WIAA, district, and league; understand eligibility requirements.
Program Promotion: Encourage student participation.
Program Organization: Hold daily practice; clear absences with building athletic director.
Standard of Care: Provide safety training, maintain records, perform basic taping and first aid.
Professionalism: Exhibit positive coaching behaviors, develop skills fundamentals, leadership, and team-oriented behavior; remain calm and fair-minded.
Sportsmanship and Ethics: Model sportsmanship, humility, and ethical behavior at all times.
Administrative
Supervision: Responsible for participants from arrival to departure.
Presentation of Rules/Regulations: Explain eligibility, participation rules, and district code.
Attention to Eligibility Rules: Ensure each participant completes eligibility process.
Accident/Injury Procedure: Call 911 for serious injuries, submit accident report within 24 hours.
Meeting Attendance: Attend building, district, and league meetings.
Responsibility for Playing Facility and Equipment: Monitor condition, report safety concerns, maintain care of equipment.
Violations and Ejections Procedure: Report violations immediately.
Program Cuts and Awards Criteria: Develop criteria approved by the athletic director.
Coach Evaluation Process: Attend evaluation meeting, present program inventory.
Head Coach as Program Leader: Meet with assistant coach to develop goals and instruction plan.
Financial and Equipment
Maintain equipment inventory, complete annual inventory, retrieve equipment after last contest.
Submit fine list and inventory within one week after last contest.
Number equipment and uniforms with school ID.
Coordinate repair, storage, cleaning, and laundering of equipment.
Prepare and submit annual budget request as required.
Fundraising: Seek approval for fundraising activities.
Other Responsibilities
Perform related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.
Additional Requirements
Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course including passing the test.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
21 years of age or older.
Criminal background clearance.
First Aid and CPR certification (must be hands‑on training). Online Concussion Training (CT) – a free course is available at www.nfhslearn.com.

WORK SCHEDULE Varies – work days depend on the schedule for the specific sport.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP Position reports to and is evaluated by the Building Athletic Director.
