Director of Operations – Multi-site Physician Group (Strong Focus on ATIOLs)
Base pay range: $140,000.00/yr – $160,000.00/yr
Position Summary Mackenzie Stuart is partnered with a leading PE-backed Ophthalmology & Optometry MSO that are seeking an accomplished Director of Operations to lead, scale, and optimize practice operations for a multi-site group in the Washington, D.C. area. The Director will drive operational excellence across clinics, ensuring practice growth, regulatory compliance, best-in-class patient experience, and successful integration of premium refractive and cataract surgical upgrades.
As an integral member of the team, you will leverage PE-backed resources and data-driven processes to manage daily operations, P&L, and growth initiatives while supporting physician leaders and care teams.
Top candidates will have direct experience delivering exceptional results with ophthalmic premium IOLs, light-adjustable lens (LAL) technology, advanced technology IOLs (ATIOLs), and other refractive surgical upgrades.
Key Responsibilities
Lead daily operations across multi-site locations, ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality care and patient experience.
Cultivate an engaged, high-performance practice culture aligned with the MSO’s growth and quality vision.
Oversee financial performance, budgeting, scheduling, and KPI reporting for all sites; drive initiatives to enhance revenue, profitability, and cost management.
Implement and optimize workflows for premium surgical products (LALs, IOLs, ATIOLs, femtosecond laser cataract surgery, etc.), partnering with physicians to maximize patient conversion and satisfaction.
Drive practice growth strategies, including expansion of premium services, strategic marketing, referring physician relationships, and site integration.
Ensure full regulatory and accreditation compliance (HIPAA, OSHA, state/federal, payer regulations).
Collaborate with clinical leadership to optimize staffing models and training, and ensure top-tier clinical quality.
Serve as point-of-contact for MSO leadership, PE sponsors, and practice physicians regarding operational initiatives, site integration, and reporting.
Oversee implementation of organizational best practices, technology system rollouts, new service lines, and process improvements.
Lead, coach, and mentor a team of site managers and supporting staff.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field required; Master’s degree (MHA, MBA) preferred.
Minimum 5 years’ progressive leadership in multi-site physician practice operations; strong preference for Ophthalmology or Optometry practice management.
Documented success managing premium surgical upgrade offerings: Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL), Advanced Technology IOLs (ATIOL), toric/multifocal IOLs, femtosecond laser cataract surgery, etc., including workflow optimization and patient conversion strategies.
Experience in a private equity-backed or MSO environment strongly preferred.
Deep knowledge of clinical, regulatory, and reimbursement issues unique to ophthalmic and optometric practices.
Data-driven mindset; strong proficiency with EMR/EHR systems, revenue cycle, and financial analytics.
Outstanding organizational, negotiation, people-leadership, and communication skills.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment with a servant-leader mindset.
